This weekend is all about the relegation battle involving Wolfsburg, Gladbach and Frankfurt.
Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen and FC Bayern München will finish in the top three regardless of their results on the final match-day. Hanover and Mainz will occupy the Europa League spots regardless of their results.

The winner of the German Cup Final between Schalke and MSV Duisburg will be the other participant in the Europa League. St.Pauli has been relegated following a thrashing by FC Bayern. Only three teams have something to play for on the final day: Wolfsburg, Gladbach and Frankfurt.

One of Germany’s most historic clubs, Borussia Mönchengladbach might pull off a miracle if they win on Saturday. A miracle will not be enough to save St.Pauli. Eintracht Frankfurt is in deep trouble and has to rely on Gladbach’s loss to have any chance of survival. Wolfsburg is also part of the bottom four.

Rooted to the bottom of the table for much of the season, Gladbach has climbed up at the right time. However, three extremely unlikely back-to-back surprise results have seen Gladbach climb to sixteenth place and the relegation play-off spot. First, they fended off Borussia Dortmund, 1-0. They then beat Hanover, 0-1. Following that game, they beat Freiburg, 2-0.

Their final opponent is Hamburger SV. Hamburger doesn’t have anything except pride to play for this season. They will want to thank the home fans though with a good performance after all that has happened this season. Considering Gladbach have managed to beat two sides that have been much better than Hamburg this season and in Freiburg, a side that has had similar results to Hamburg, they should be able to win this one.

Eintracht Frankfurt sits just a point behind Gladbach on 34 points. Frankfurt will be hoping that Gladbach and Wolfsburg do not pick up all three points as that will see them relegated. Unfortunately for them, they play Borussia Dortmund at the Signal Iduna Park.
Dortmund will want to win for the fans prior to picking up their championship medals and the ‘ugly salad bowl.’

That leaves Wolfsburg. Felix Magath has come out and said that he will continue to be the head-coach of Wolfsburg even if they get relegated to the 2.Bundesliga. Wolfsburg has the same number of points as Gladbach, 35. If both Frankfurt and Gladbach win on the final day and Wolfsburg loses or even draws, Wolfsburg will get relegated.

Wolfsburg has an easier assignment on the final day in the form of 1899 Hoffenheim. Hoffenheim has had an average season and sits in ninth spot. Hoffenheim doesn’t have anything to play for this season and this could help Magath’s desperate side. A point will be enough for Wolfsburg incase of losses for Gladbach and Frankfurt.

So, who will be relegated on the final day? Taking recent results into consideration, Gladbach is perhaps a safe bet as far as survival is considered. Wolfsburg and Frankfurt have both been poor but Wolfsburg managed to grind out a result on Match-day 32 against Bremen. So, perhaps, Wolfsburg will survive while Gladbach will claim the relegation play-off spot which they perhaps deserve. Frankfurt will perhaps join St.Pauli in the second division.
