Miguelina Elói Assis dos Santos, the mother of the Selecao icon, sadly passed away from coronavirus complications.

Lionel Messi leads the tribute for former Barcelona team-mate Ronaldinho after it was confirmed the Brazilian icon's mother sadly passed away. The Argentine star joined the likes of Atletico Mineiro in showing support for the Selecao legend during this family tragedy.

Miguelina Elói Assis dos Santos died at the age of 71 having been hospitalized before Christmas. The retired South American announced that she had been admitted to the Mãe de Deus Hospital in Porto Alegre in December after contracting COVID-19.

"Dear friends, my mother has covid-19 and we are fighting so that she recovers soon," the 40year-old said. "She is in intensive care, receiving the best possible treatment. I would like to thank everyone in advance for all of the positive energy you always send. With love. Stay strong Mum."

Unfortunately, Miguelina lost her battle with the coronavirus after suffering from complications. This was confirmed by local media, as per Spanish publication AS.

"Ronnie, I have no words, I can't believe it," Messi wrote on Instagram.

"Just sending you a lot of strength and a big hug to you and the family. I'm very sorry, RIP."

Atletico Mineiro, who Ronaldinho played for from 2012 to 2014, also issued a classy statement on social media, writing: "[The] club is mourning the death of Dona Miguelina.

"It is with great sadness that Clube Atlético Mineiro receives the news of the death of Dona Miguelina, mother of Ronaldinho.

"The Atleticana Family is in mourning and shares the moment of pain with their idol.

"May God welcome you with open arms and comfort the heart of our eternal ace. Rest in peace, Dona Miguelina."

It's not surprising to see Leo's warm message for his former team-mate as the Samba legend was one of many influential figures in the Argentine's upbringing. Many see Ronaldinho as La Pulga's mentor, having passed down his knowledge of the beautiful game before handing on the torch to the six-time Ballon d'Or winner.
