The Reds are gearing up for their round of 16 clash with the Bundesliga giants as Klopp’s men desperately aim to return to form. Here’s our preview of the first-leg tie.

RB Leipzig vs Liverpool – preview

Liverpool will shift their focus to the UEFA Champions League this midweek, kicking off their round of 16 match-up against RB Leipzig on Tuesday. The Reds will lock horns with the Bundesliga giants in the first leg at 3 p.m. ET as Jurgen Klopp's men desperately go in search of some form.

This fixture might have come at the right time as it sees the Merseyside giants get away from the Premier League, where they have recently struggled. On the flip side, with form having abandoned them, Salah and Co. are in danger of suffering a fourth straight defeat.

Yes, you have read that right – Liverpool, the reigning champions of England, have lost their last three games in a row. In fact, the Premier League giants have won only three times in their last 12 matches across all competitions, suffering a staggering six defeats along the way.

After losing their unbeaten home record in a 1-0 loss to Burnley, the Reds bounced back by beating Tottenham and West Ham 3-1. However, three defeats in a row have since followed, going 1-0 and 4-1 down at home to Brighton and Man City, respectively, before losing 3-1 away to Leicester.

Klopp has been unlucky with injuries this term, losing his three senior center-backs – Van Dijk, Gomez, and Matip – for the remainder of the season. Furthermore, unusual errors from Alisson have costed them points recently, with the Brazilian shot-stopper being guilty of errors in the defeat against City and Leicester.

As a result, Klopp has conceded the Premier League title race and will have to fight for a top-four finish, having dropped to sixth. A win over RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League would be the perfect way to turn things around but beating Nagelsmann's side is never an easy task.

Die Roten Bullen can be beaten – they've succumbed to defeat against Dortmund and Mainz in 2021. However, those are their only two losses in their last 17 outings across all competitions. Having beaten Man United 3-2 to book their ticket to the last 16, RB Leipzig have shown they're capable of overcoming Europe's top dogs. The question is whether they will add Liverpool to their list of victims.

Team news

RB Leipzig: Dayot Upamecano has signed for Bayern Munich but will not be joining the Bavarians until the summer and will thus be involved and focused on this game. Ibrahima Konate has returned and is expected to feature. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Emil Forsberg, Konrad Laimer, Benjamin Henrichs and Dominik Szoboszlai.

Liverpool: Klopp could be without 10 first-team players – when we said he has been unlucky with injuries, we meant it! Milner was forced off with a hamstring issue in the Leicester defeat, joining the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Diogo Jota on the sidelines. Keita has returned to training but this game comes too soon for the midfielder. Fabinho will undergo a late test while Ben Davies and Origi are expected to be fit for this match.

Key stats

  • Liverpool and RB Leipzig have never met before in a competitive fixture.

  • However, Die Roten Bullen have met English oppositions twice before and got the last laugh on both occasions, eliminating Tottenham in the round of 16 last season and finishing ahead of Man United in the group stage this term.

  • The Merseyside giants haven't lost any of their last five away games against German clubs (W3, D2).

  • Nagelsmann's side boast the worst defensive record out of all of the last 16 teams, conceding a whopping 12 times so far.
