La Liga Roundup after Feb. 14 weekend

La Liga Roundup - Atlético back to winning ways as title race intensifies

February 15, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
The top teams in the league managed to win their games in the week leading to one more round of UEFA Champions League matches.

The 2020-21 La Liga season is getting older, and it seems that the title race will be extended until the very last minute, contrary to what happened last year. Atlético may be on top, but many things can change for the leading pack as their UEFA Champions League ties get underway this week.

Atlético's win was followed by Barcelona's thrashing of Alavés at home. During Sunday's games, Real Madrid followed suit with a convincing win over Valencia, which brought one more injury issue for Zinedine Zidane. Without further ado, let's get deeper into the main talking points that took place in the Spanish top-flight in the past few days.

Top five teams in La Liga until February 14

Atlético maintained their five-point lead in La Liga thanks to Angel Correa's game-winning goal against Granada. Real Madrid also managed to beat Valencia, which gave Zidane's men a three-point advantage over Barcelona, who still have one game in hand. Elsewhere, Sevilla kep their pursuit of Barcelona alive, while Real Sociedad returned to the fifth spot thanks to their win over Getafe and Villarreal's loss to Betis.

La Liga's Top 3 scorers

Luis Suárez maintained the top spot in La Liga's goalscoring charts, but Lionel Messi's brace has the Argentine breathing down the back of the neck of his former teammate. Atlético's game in hand against Levante in the next few days should give Suárez a chance to open the gap a bit more. Meanwhile, Villarreal's Gerard Moreno confirmed himself as the third most prolific striker in La Liga with 13 goals.

La Liga - Top headlines

  • Benzema continues scoring streak vs Valencia - The French striker has proven key to Real Madrid's chances of winning La Liga again, and his performance against Valencia saw him score at least one goal in his last five games against Los Naranjeros. That fact has turned Valencia into Benzema's favorite victim.story to follow. García reportedly committed suicide caused by depression last Sunday, and Coates' gesture was praised on both ends of the Atlantic after sharing the pitch with García at Nacional and with the Uruguayan U-20 team.

  • Messi adds one more record to successful stint at Camp Nou - The Argentine ace now shares the record for most La Liga games played for Los Culés with his former teammate, Xavi Hernández. Fans mau expect Messi to become the all-time leader in this department next week, when they clash against Cádiz.

  • Llorente leads La Liga midfielders with goal vs Granada - The Spanish footballer now leads all midfielders when it comes to being involved in goals. So far, the former Real Madrid player has scored seven goals and handed out seven assists, which make him the midfielder with the highest influence rate in La Liga.

Top matches to watch in La Liga from February 19-22, 2021

  • Atlético vs Levante - Los Colchoneros will play their game in hand against Levante this Wednesday, and if that was not enough, they will have to host them during the weekend for their second match of the season. With five points between Simeone's men and Real Madrid, winning both of these matches against the team from Valencia could be crucial in the title race.

  • Real Valladolid vs Real Madrid - Usually, this would be a walk in the park for Los Blancos, but given the massive number of injury absences in Zidane's roster, the chances of watching Valladolid pulling off a shocking result increase. Let's wait and see if Real Madrid can walk away from José Zorrilla Stadium unharmed.

  • Barcelona vs Cádiz - This will be the end of a busy week for Barcelona, who will face PSG in the UEFA Champions League and host Cádiz at Camp Nou on Sunday. Los Gaditanos claimed a shocking win against Los Culés in their first clash of the season, and it would certainly be special to see the yellow and blue side claiming one more victory over Los Culés in a game where Messi is expected to become the all-time leader for Barcelona in La Liga games played.
