Just as Edwin van der Sar is preparing to play yet another UEFA Champions League match through Manchester United vs Schalke 04, Ferguson has shared an opinion on the Dutch's career.
Alex Ferguson has seen Edwin van der Sar wearing Manchester United’s colours for the past 6 years now and the manager has backed the Dutch shot stopper to retire at the end of this season. Van der Sar will hope for Wednesday night’s Manchester United vs Schalke 04 match not to be his last UEFA Champions League match.

The Red Devils are holding a 2-0 advantage and another clean sheet for Edwin van der Sar will definitely inspire Manchester United to reach the final at Wembley. In the build-up to the Schalke 04 encounter, Coach Alex Ferguson discussed about Edwin van der Sar’s career at Old Trafford. The Old Scot spoke to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, saying:

“If I was giving advice to Edwin van der Sar right now, I would say, ‘retire’.It’s the absolute pinnacle of his career.

“And I think that, sometimes, when a player gets to that age, all of a sudden age comes on you very suddenly and I wouldn’t want to see Edwin van der Sar in that situation.

“He’s had such a fantastic career and there’s no reason why he should risk another year and drop below his standard.

“If you could see him in our dressing room before games and at half-time, he is absolutely fantastic. He deserves to go out at the very, very top, which I hope he does.”

It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will end their season on a high. They possess a great advantage ahead of their UEFA Champions League semi-final match at home to Schalke04. However, they now have to think about bouncing back.

A 1-0 defeat away to Arsenal cut their lead at the top of the English Premier League table to online 3 points last weekend. Ferguson would want to avoid any further upsets against Manchester United’s German opposition on Wednesday.
