Manchester United were pegged back at the death in Saturday's league clash with Everton after taking the lead on two occasions.

Manchester United were dealt a huge blow in their quest to climb back to the top of the Premier League table after being held to a 3-3 draw against Everton. A dramatic end to Saturday night's encounter saw the Red Devils concede a late Calvert-Lewin equalizer to share spoils with Everton.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men entered the clash needing a win to establish a two-point lead above city rivals Manchester City who will take on Liverpool on Sunday. They started off the night in brilliant fashion, opening the scoring through Edinson Cavani's header in the 24th minute. Right on the stroke of half-time, Bruno Fernandes doubled the advantage with a stunner.

However, a quick-fire double following the restart for the second half redefined the course of the game. First, it was Abdoulaye Doucoure who pulled one back for Everton after a goalkeeping error by David de Gea before James Rodriguez got the leveller with an assist from the Frenchman.

A brilliant header by Scott McTominay then put the Red Devils in front once more in the 70th minute before a series of poor decisions ruined the day for the hosts. First, Axel Tuanzebe - who replaced Mason Greenwood in the third minute of stoppage time - caught Everton's Josh King with a late tackle to give away a free-kick on the right flank. An in-swinger by Lucas Digne was nodded on by former United defender Michael Keane and was then tapped home by Dominic Calvert Lewin with what was virtually the last kick of the game.

The night's result meant that Manchester United could see a five-point lead being established above them should Manchester City defeat Liverpool on Sunday. The deficit could increase to eight if Pep Guardiola's men winning the game they have in hand against Aston Villa.
