The Stars and Stripes will kick off their activity in 2021 with a friendly game against a combative Caribbean side that has not played in over a year.

The first month of the year will also bring the first match for the USMNT in 2021. Gregg Berhalter's men will lock horns against Trinidad and Tobago in what should be an entertaining game to watch on Sunday.

Both teams will be limited by the restrictions imposed by local authorities regarding COVID-19 quarantine periods, which is why the USMNT and the Soca Warriors will not be using some of their most talented players. In the USMNT's case, the team will include MLS players exclusively.

The Yanks will have some interesting footballers around, including Jozy Altidore's return to the national team. The footballer is third in the all-time goalscoring list for the USMNT, and his vast experience will come in handy when both teams take the pitch on Sunday. Other notable players available in Berhalter's roster include Paul Arriola, Sebastian Lletget, Kellyn Acosta, and Aaron Long.

As for the team from the Caribbean, Terry Fenwick has called up some of the team's veterans and quite a few rising talents from their local league. Some of the most seasoned players in this squad include goalkeeper Marvin Phillip and defender Marvin Jones. Curiously, both of these players are currently unemployed.

This will be the 27th game between these teams. Surprisingly, this will only be the fifth friendly game between these sides, with some of those competitive matches being quite memorable. One of those episodes between these teams took place in the 1990 WC Qualifiers, when the USMNT claimed their spot in the World Cup by beating T&T. Eighteen years later, the Soca Warriors would claim a well-deserved payback when they eliminated the Stars and Stripes from the 2018 World Cup with a shocking 2-1 win in the last game of the 2018 WC Qualifiers in CONCACAF.

This will be the first of many games for both teams this year, with the CONCACAF Nations League, the CONCACAF Gold Cup, and the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers ready to be played.
