De Gea's howler gifts Sheffield United win

Watch: Two De Gea mistakes gift Sheffield United historic over Manchester United

January 27, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Spanish goalkeeper committed two howlers to gift the Blades their first Premier League win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Manchester United were dealt a massive blow in their Premier League title pursuit after two errors by goalkeeper David de Gea handed Sheffield United an unlikely win at Old Trafford. The Blades secured a 2-1 win to claim their first ever win away to the Red Devils in 48 years.

United entered the clash needing a win to climb back to the top of the league table after being demoted to second place by rivals Manchester City. However, a poor start to the night's encounter resulted in the hosts trailing inside the first 24 minutes after David de Gea made a mess of a save. The Spanish goalkeeper, who has received a fair share of criticisms for commiting howlers in recent years, mistimed an attempt to punch out a cross, handing Kean Bryan the opportunity to score his first-ever goal as a Sheffield United player.

In the 64th minute, Harry Maguire gave the Red Devils a lifeline by heading home his third-ever goal for his side, restoring parity to set up a grandstand finale. However, the dream of yet another headline highlighting Man United's comeback prowess could not manifest with a second defensive error resulting in their first league defeat in 14 games.

Having regained possession from a failed attack by Sheffield in the 74th-minute, Harry Maguire failed to clear his lines and ended up passing the ball to his goalkeeper David de Gea. The Spaniard who was under pressure from McGoldrick subsequently placed an erroneous pass to gift the Blades possession once more. After a brief exchange of passes in United's box, an unmarked Oliver Burke saw his shot deflecting off Axel Tuanzebe for his first Premier League goal.
