A mouth-watering clash awaits as cross-town rivals Inter and AC Milan square off on January 26th, with a coveted spot in the Coppa Italia semi-finals awaiting the victor.

Preview: Inter vs AC Milan

Currently sitting in second and first respectively, both Milan-based clubs have had strong campaigns so far under the guidance of Antonio Conte and Stefano Pioli. Just two points separate the two, and if things continue in this vein, fans could see a very interesting Scudetto battle unfold as both the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri seek to de-throne Juventus as the champions of Italy.

Both teams, however, come into this meeting off the back of disappointing results over the weekend. Inter, who will be serving as the "home" side, were held to a frustrating scoreless draw with Udinese, which will have been especially frustrating considering the Nerazzurri had battled to a crucial 2-0 win over Juventus in the Derby d'Italia in the prior round.

Although it wasn't a loss for Conte's side, it certainly will have felt more like two points dropped than one point won, especially considering that Udinese are winless in their last five games and sit just four points away from the drop zone. Moreover, this game marks the first time Inter have been unable to find the back of the net. Even in their two defeats so far - to Milan and surprisingly, Sampdoria - the Nerazzurri, who are currently the highest scoring side in the league, were able to grab a goal.

Meanwhile, Milan will come into this tie having suffered a 3-0 loss to Atalanta. While their result wasn't as shocking as Inter's drab scoreless stalemate, it still will have left the Rossoneri reeling as it's the first time they were unable to score in a Serie A match. Moreover, it marks the second loss in their last four games, which is notable as the Diavolo went through 2020 unbeaten and only lost their first match on January 6th, when they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat to reigning champions Juventus.

With that in mind, both sides will be looking to recover with a positive result as they meet in the second Derby della Madonnina of the campaign. The winner of this upcoming Coppa Italia quarter-finals tie will take on Juventus or Serie B SPAL in the semi-finals, and naturally, one can certainly predict who either Inter or Milan will prefer to face in the next round.

Both the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri did not have an easy time in the round of 16, with Inter needing extra time and a late goal from Romelu Lukaku to finally dispatch a stubborn Fiorentina side, while Milan failed to fire against relegation threatened Torino and had to book their spot here via narrowly edging out the Granata in a penalty shoot-out.

Finally, both teams will be hoping to get their hands on a trophy that has eluded them for a decade or more. Inter's last win in this competition was in 2011, while one will have to back nearly 20 years to note the last time Milan were able to win it (in 2003).

Team news: Inter vs AC Milan

Inter: The "home" team have largely a full-strength team heading into this match, with only Danilo D'Ambrosio still on the sidelines.

Milan: The "visiting" side will be missing first-choice shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma after he was sent off in the prior round. In addition, Ismael Bennacer and Hakan Calhanoglu will have to miss this game due to a thigh injury and COVID-19 respectively. However, Pioli will be able to bring back several key players, including Ante Rebic, Alexis Saelemaekers, and Rade Krunic, while new signing Fikayo Tomori could feature from the bench, and skipper Alessio Romagnoli is fit to return to his place in the center of defense.
