The Gunners will be visiting the St. Mary's Stadium for their FA Cup 4th round showdown with the Saints. Who will progress and who will bow out? Here's our preview of Southampton vs Arsenal.

Preview – Southampton vs Arsenal

Arsenal are back in action in the FA Cup as the reigning champions resume their title defense with an interesting trip to St. Mary's Stadium. The Gunners' clash with Southampton is one of the more exciting 4th round ties as it is one of only three all-Premier League showdowns.

This is the first of two clashes between the Gunners and the Saints in the span of four days, with Arteta's men traveling to Hasenhüttl's side next midweek. However, the focus will be on this FA Cup fixture as it looks to be one of a few routes for the north London giants into Europe given that they are 10th in the league and six points adrift a Europa League spot.

Aubameyang and Co. head into this fixture on the back of a lovely 3-0 win over Newcastle in the league. The club's Gabonese striker regained his mojo in that victory, scoring twice and winning the match ball in what has been a tough season for the world-class striker.

That victory was Arsenal's fifth in their last six games, marking a complete turn in form. The FA Cup holders went a month without a Premier League victory, an astounding seven-game winless run from November to December in the build-up to their impressive Boxing Day victory over Chelsea.

An Emirates Stadium clash with Southampton coincided with that horrendous barren spell, with the Gunners rescuing a point in a 1-1 stalemate. A draw is not the goal this time around, as the north London giants will be keen on continuing their winning streak and progressing further in this tournament.

Southampton have failed to win three of their last five fixtures, triumphing only once in their last six league encounters. The Saints will need to up their performance or risk crashing out of the FA Cup at home. Tune in to find out whether they will eliminate the reigning champions or bow out in the 4th round.

Team news

Southampton: The home side are without several players, with the likes of Jannik Vestergaard, Nathan Redmond, Oriol Romeu, Moussa Djenepo, Michael Obafemi, Nathan Tella, and William Smallbone being on the sidelines. However, it is not all doom and gloom for the Saints as Danny Ings, Che Adams, and Stuart Armstrong are expected to return.

Arsenal: Pablo Mari is out for this fixture but Dani Ceballos is in contention after recovering from his calf issue. Aubameyang recently returned to goalscoring form but could be rested for this fixture alongside Saka and Smith Rowe, with Willian, Pepe, Martinelli, and Elneny vying for playing time.

Key stats

  • Arsenal have lost only once in their last nine encounters with Southampton.

  • The Saints have never eliminated Arsenal from the FA Cup in four previous encounters.
