WTW AC Milan vs Atalanta on January 23, 2021

AC Milan look to make it three wins on the spin, but Atalanta could present a banana peel

January 22, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
League leaders AC Milan will be looking to possibly expand the gap beween themselves and the chasing pack as they host Atalanta, but the visitors will be desperate to rebound after two straight draws.

Preview: Milan vs Atalanta

Currently on top of the table, Milan will be looking to expand their lead as they host Atalanta on Saturday. The Rossoneri suffered their first loss of the season as they were outplayed in a 3-1 defeat to Juventus, but have since rebounded and will come into this match off the back of a 2-0 road win over Cagliari. Veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was at his best once again, netting a brace to heap more misery on the floundering Rossoblu and ensure that Stefano Pioli's men continue to remain ahead of cross-town rivals Inter.

The loss to Juventus marks the only defeat in Milan's last 30 games, but the Diavolo will be very wary of their upcoming opponents. Although they hold a slight advantage in the head-to-head records, with 14 wins versus Atalanta's 10, the league leaders have actually had more problems with the Bergamo-based outfit as of late. In fact, Milan have won just one of their last ten matches against Atalanta, and that includes the last six trips La Dea have made to the Stadio San Siro.

Despite stuttering recently, with back-to-back draws against struggling Genoa and Udinese, Atalanta have nonetheless been in solid form over all, as they are unbeaten in their last 12 matches in all competitions. That includes their last nine league games. Moreover, the visitors, who shocked many observers by securing a Champions League berth last season, are among the highest-scoring sides in the league with 41 goals. In fact, only Inter (with 45) has accumulated more, meaning that if Gian Piero Gasperini's side can find their shooting boots, this could end up being an entertaining, high-scoring clash for both fans and neutrals alike.

Team news: Milan vs Atalanta

Milan: Pioli will have to contend with handful of absentees, with both Alexis Saelemaekers and Alessio Romagnoli suspended, while Ismael Bennacer and Matteo Gabbia are both out injured. However, the hosts have been given a major boost as Rade Krunic, Theo Hernandez, and Ante Rebic have been allowed to return to training after being re-tested for COVID-19 and being cleared.

Atalanta: Only Mario Pasalic will miss this fixture for the visitors, meaning that Gasperini can field a very strong XI against the league leaders.
