An extraordinary turn of events ended with the Basque defeating the Catalans as their talisman received his marching orders.

Athletic Club denied Barcelona the opportunity to extend their record as the most-successful club in the history of the Supercopa de Espana by defeating the Camp Nou outfit in the final of this year's edition. The Lions scored a late equalizer in Sunday night's encounter to tie the game at 2-2, forcing an extra-time and subsequently winning it via a 3-2 scoreline.

While the game was not short of chances, the deadlock was not broken until the 40th minute with Antoine Griezmann firing Los Blaugrana ahead by tapping home Jordi Alba's low cross. However, less than 120 seconds later, Athletic Club restored parity through Oscar de Marcos.

Inside the 77th minute, Antoine Griezmann stepped up once again to finish off a well-worked move to put Barca ahead. With all indications pointing at a win for the Camp Nou outfit, Athletic Club came right back into the game after Asier Villalibre tapped home a free-kick right in the 90th minute.

The Basque club did not rest on their laurels and eventually got ahead for the first time in the game thanks to Inaki Williams' goal in the third minute of extra-time. Not much ensued for both clubs after the Spaniard's goal, although Barcelona will finish the proceeding with nine outfield players following the sending off of Lionel Messi.

The Blaugrana skipper was sanctioned after the Video Assistant Referee found him guilty of violent conduct in an off-ball incident. The red card was the first-ever received by the Argentine in his career with the Catalan club.
