About the USMNT in FIFA World Cup history

To date, the USMNT has qualified for 11 World Cups, including the 2022 edition to be staged this year in Qatar. The Yanks' best run has been making it to the semi-finals at the inaugural tournament in 1930, but between 1954 and 1986, they failed to qualify. In 2002, the team made an impressive run to the quarter-finals, where they lost in unfortunate fashion to Germany, and in their last appearance, the Stars and Stripes were beaten by Belgium in the round of 16. After missing out on the 2018 edition in embarrassing fashion, the USMNT will be eager to put in a good shift this time around.

Who is the USMNT's coach for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

49-year-old Gregg Berhalter has been in charge of the USMNT since December 2, 2018, and will be making his first ever appearance as a senior manager at the World Cup. Prior to taking his current position, he managed a handful of club sides both in the USA as well as in Sweden, and will be hoping to help guide the team to success this year in Qatar.

After retiring, his first position was with Swedish side Hammarby IF, where he was in charge from 2011 to 2013 before returning to the USA to manage MLS side Columbus Crew for five years, from 2013 to 2018 before being tapped to take over the USMNT in December of that year.

Berhalter will be hoping to help the USMNT have a strong run at this year's World Cup

To date, Berhlalter has successfully clinched the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup as well as leading the USMNT to victory during the 2019/2020 CONCACAF Nations League, and will definitely hope to use that to spearhead his team's success at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

USMNT's expectations ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

The USMNT secured their spot at their 11th FIFA World Cup after finishing third in CONCACAF, with a record of W7 D4 L3. However, despite a solid run in qualifiers, Berhalter's side have not impressed in their two most recent matches prior to the upcoming World Cup. The Stars and Stripes first lost 2-0 to Japan before being held to a surprise draw by Saudi Arabia.

Given that they are in a group alongside England and Wales, the USMNT could face a tough test to qualify for the knockout rounds. England, who made a run to the 2020 EURO finals, certainly are no slouches, while Wales, if Gareth Bale and other stars are on top of their game, could also present a tricky opponent. As such, the Stars and Stripes could find it difficult to progress if they do not get things right in their group stage opener against Wales.

USMNT: Key players for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

Under Berhalter's tenure, several young players have begun to make their marks, and many will be looking to have a huge impact at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Although Christian Pulisic has struggled for consistent game time at Chelsea, the former Dortmund man is still expected to play a vital role for the Stars and Stripes in Qatar - provided that he can stay fit and avoid injury.

Meanwhile, Gio Reyna, who plays at Pulisic's ex-club Dortmund, will be another young, aspiring player hoping to have a big splash, along with Juventus midfield stalwart Weston McKennie, Milan defender Sergino Dest (who made history as the first American player to feature in El Clasico during his time with Barcelona), and Leeds United's Tyler Adams.

Indeed, in looking at the USMNT's roster ahead of their last two friendlies, Berhalter has fielded a very young squad, with only two players being older than 30, while 15 of them were 25 years and younger.

USMNT's 2022 FIFA World Cup schedule

The USMNT have been placed in a very interesting quartet, with England, Wales, and Iran comprising Group B. Arguably, the most interesting clash will feature the USMNT and England, which will take place on November 25th. The Stars and Stripes will begin their 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign against Wales on November 21st, before concluding proceedings with a tie against Iran on November 29th.
