Preview: Saint-Etienne vs PSG

Reigning Ligue 1 champs concluded 2020 in third spot, just one point behind league leaders Lyon. They also will now commence the 2021 with a new man on the tactician's bench after Thomas Tuchel was sacked to make way for former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, as a 4-0 win over Strasbourg was not enough to save the German manager's job. For Pochettino, who played nearly 100 games for Les Parisiens, he will be eager to get his hands on some silverware as quickly as possible - especially as that eluded him during his five year tenure as manager of Tottenham. And he certainly will get his first crack at a trophy next week when PSG take on Marseille in the French Super Cup, but first he will be looking to help get the capital giants back on track in his first game in charge this Wednesday.

As for Saint-Etienne, although they are unbeaten in their last six Ligue 1 games, five of those have been draws. As such, Les Verts find themselves just six points clear of the drop zone. Two of their draws were against Dijon and Nimes, who sit in 19th and 20th spot, which certainly reads as a wasted opportunity for Claude Puel's men to put some distance between themselves and the teams in the bottom third of the table.

Given how congested things are, a loss to PSG will see Saint-Etienne pushed further down towards that unwanted relegation area - especially as Reims and Nantes, who are just behind them in 16th and 17th place will be facing Dijon and Lyon. And as one can see, Rems, naturally, has a great shot at leap-frogging Les Verts in the table.

Indeed, Saint-Etienne, who have drawn their last three home games, haven't actually won a home game in over three months. Their last victory at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard was back in mid-September, and more concerning is the fact that they haven't beaten PSG since November 2012. Although their visitors will be missing a plethora of players due to injuries, the fact that they were unable to beat relegation-threatened sides like Dijon and Nimes doesn't bode well for Les Verts ahead of their first match of 2021, to say the least.

Team news: Saint-Etienne vs PSG

Saint-Etienne: Both Yvan Neyou and Mahdi Camara are banned for this match, while Panagiotis Retsos, Yvann Macon, Gabriel Silva and Wahbi Khazri are all injured.

PSG: Pochettino will have to do some major reshuffling in defense, as Alessandro Florenzi, Presnel Kimpembe, and Layvin Kurzawa are still on the treatment table, while Rafinha has COVID-19. Juan Bernat remains out for the long-haul, and Neymar is still not recovered following a nasty ankle injury he sustained last year. Finally, Danilo Pereira, Abdou Diallo, Pablo Sarabia, and Mauro Icardi also are among those who aren't fully fit to feature for this upcoming tie.
