Los Rojiblancos look to head into 2021 as La Liga leaders but will need to beat their opponent in order to ensure this. Here’s our preview of Atletico vs Getafe.

Atletico vs Getafe – preview

Atletico are gearing up for their 14th match of the 2020/21 season and their final game of this calendar year. Given that the club will not return to the pitch after this tie until the third of January, the result of Wednesday's home game could set the tone for Los Rojiblancos heading into 2021.

Diego Simeone's side are currently top of the table, boasting 32 points from their opening 13 games. The 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid threatened to derail Atletico's season as they were unbeaten heading into that derby, but Joao Felix and Co. were quick to bounce back, beating Elche and then Real Sociedad in the two games that followed.

Furthermore, the Wanda Metropolitano side have two games in-hand over Los Blancos, who are level on points. Victory over the festive period would strengthen their title bid and put them in the driving seat to win their first Spanish Primera Division title since 2014.

One thing working in their favor is Getafe's form. The visitors boast only four wins this season and have triumphed only once in their last nine league fixtures. Nonetheless, they have picked up four points from their last two games and thus find themselves in the 13th spot in the table.

However, while they are only eight points behind the top six, they are also only two points above the relegation zone, which is more worrisome. Their goal should be to get as far away as possible from the danger zone and they could do that on Wednesday. Will they be able to secure an impressive result against Atletico? Tune in to find out.

Getafe: The visitors will be without Allan Nyom, Damian Suarez, and Erick Cabaco due to suspension. Cucho Hernandez and Mathias Olivera, on the other hand, are back and available for selection.
