The Premier League's two top clubs will go head to head at Anfield on Wednesday night with the race for the top spot intensifying. Over the weekend, both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur suffered respective upsets to drop points against some of the league's fringe sides. A tough test at Fulham led the former to settle for a 1-1 draw while the latter also picked up the same result in their away trip to Crystal Palace.

For Jurgen Klopp's men, the prime objective is to mount a strong Premier League title defense in a season in which they have had ill-luck with injuries. In recent weeks, the lack of consistency has also been an issue with the Reds looking to secure successive wins in the league for the first time since October. While they have only lost just one of their last 10 matches in the English top-flight, just five of the remaining nine games have resulted in wins with the other four games finishing in draws.

In the grand scheme of things, Tottenham Hotspur will be particularly happy with the results in the camp of Liverpool with their quest to secure the league title gaining momentum. The Reds' draw at Fulham over the weekend safeguarded their spot as the table-toppers in the premiership, having also dropped points against Fulham. But, on the contrary, Jose Mourinho's men will be proud of their achievements thus far although it remains early days yet.

The Lilywhites go into the mid-week's blockbuster encounter off the back of an unbeaten run in the Premier League that stretches back to September. Since losing to Everton at Goodison Park, the North London club have gone on an 11-game run without suffering any losses. They have won seven games and drew four within the period.

While Jose Mourinho has often debunked the idea that his side is among the favorites to win the title this season, they have shown enough to be considered as such. And, against Liverpool on Wednesday, Spurs can make a huge statement by getting the better of the league's defending champions - especially with their long unbeaten home record on the line.

Liverpool's long injury list could be the X-factor in this crucial clash with the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Thiago Alcantara, Joe Gomez, James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri, Diogo Jota and Kostas Tsimikas all out of contention. Joel Matip's availability remains uncertain after being substituted in the draw with Fulham due to back spasms. Meanwhile, Naby Keita faces a late fitness test after picking up a fresh muscle injury.

For Tottenham Hotspur, Erik Lamela and Japheth Tanganga will be unavailable for the trip to Liverpool. Relatively, Gareth Bale will return to the side after missing the trip to Crystal Palace as a result of illness.
