CONCACAF Champions League - Quarterfinals preview

CONCACAF Champions League - How to watch the Quarterfinals on December 15-16, 2020

December 15, 2020 By Oscar Rojas
CONCACAF'S premier club competition returns after a nine-month hiatus to determine the names of its semi-finalists.

Nine months had to go by for the CONCACAF Champions League to return to action, and even though there will be no fans in the stands, all remaining games promise to bring excitement and thrills to all fans who will be cheering for their favorite squads at home.

The tournament will see all return legs being played as planned with the exception of the tie between LAFC and Cruz Azul, which will now be played as a one-leg tie. Once all semi-finalists are known, all ties will be played on a one-leg format.

Let's have a look at how all Quarterfinal games will be played. The number inside each bracket indicates the score for the first leg in case it was played.

Olimpia (2) vs Montreal Impact (1)

The team from Honduras is close to making a comeback to the tournament's semi-finals for the first time since 2000, and even if they face Thierry Henry's men, the team coached by Pedro Troglio seems to have everything in their power to make it to the next round. As for the Canadian side, Henry's men need to keep their goal unbeaten to stand a chance, since one goal by Olimpia would force them to score three times to keep their hopes alive.

Tigres UANL (1) vs New York City FC (0)

The blue and gold team from Mexico claimed a last-minute win almost without looking for it, and now they are in prime position to claim their spot in the semis. Ronny Deila's men have to score at least twice to keep their chances alive, but facing a team led by André-Pierre Gignac and with one of the best defensive units in Liga MX, that feat seems to be easier said than done.

Atlanta United (0) vs Club América (3)

The Mexican side claimed the most emphatic lead in the first leg, and as things stand, Atlanta will have to score four times to try and beat Las Águilas. With that in mind, and even without some of its stellar footballers due to injuries or illness, Miguel Herrera's men should not have a problem to make it to the next round and ease the pain caused by their early exit from the Liga MX playoffs.

Los Angeles FC vs Cruz Azul

The only clash where no first leg was played will face one of the best teams in the MLS and one of the top Liga MX teams. Carlos Vela and Co. said goodbye to their title hopes early in the playoff stage, but that does not compare to the disappointment suffered by Cruz Azul's followers, who watched in horror how their team wasted a four-goal lead in their semi-final tie against Pumas. This game will surely provide a proper closure to the quarterfinal stage, and it will also give us something to look up to in the next round of the competition.
