Preview: Napoli vs Real Sociedad

Although they presently sit on top of their quartet, Napoli will come into their final group stage match knowing that they cannot afford to lose to upcoming opponents Real Sociedad. That's because as things stand, there are three teams with a realistic chance to qualify for the round of 32: Napoli, Real Sociedad, and AZ. Only Croatian outfit Rijeka, who have only one point, have been eliminated.

With AZ facing Riejka and expected to easily beat them, the pressure will be on the Partenopei to get things right against their Spanish visitors. A draw will certainly suffice for Gennaro Gattuso's men, as that would take them to 11 points, along with AZ, who would then also have 11 and would leave Real Sociedad with nine points. However, should they lose and AZ, as expected win, then Napoli would be out of the competition for good.

Certainly, the Partenopei, who come into this game having cruised to an easy 4-0 win over Crotone in Serie A, to help them move up to third in the table, will be kicking themselves for not earning all three points against AZ in their last Europa League match. Since losing 3-1 to league leaders AC Milan, they've won three of their last four games across all competitions, including hammering Roma 4-0, and recorded shutouts in all three of those victories.

They have also already beaten Real Sociedad earlier this season, with Matteo Politano's goal enough to give the Southern Italian side a vital win in Spain back in October, and so far, only AZ have been able to beat them in European action at the Stadio San Paolo (which has been renamed as the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona in honor of Napoli's most iconic player).

Meanwhile, upcoming visitors Real Sociedad, who sit ina very impressive second spot, which is ahead of both Barcelona and Real Madrid, are unbeaten in their last five La Liga games. Although they've drawn four of their last five matches across all competitions, they are still second in their group, ahead of AZ, but will be bitterly disappointed that they weren't able to close out the game against bottom ranked Riejka last round as that would have put them in a much better position ahead of this game.

A draw isn't likely going to be enough for Real Sociedad as unless if AZ have a completly off night, they will beat Rijeka, so they will have to find a way to defeat Napoli. The visitors, however, will have even more motivation to do so, having lost to the Partenopei at the Reale Arena earlier this season, and it will be very interesting to see who comes out on top in what should be a very entertaining clash.

Napoli: Victor Osimhen has returned to light training following a shoulder injury, but isn't fully fit to play just yet. Fabian Ruiz may get to feature here from the bench if he passes a late fitness test.

Real Sociedad: David Silva, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Jon Guridi have all struggled with injuries recently but coach Imanol Alguacil will be expected to bring them to Naples and hope they can manage to recover in time for this crunch tie.
