Ajax and Atalanta will be battling for a spot in the round of 16 as they lock horns on the final day of the 2020/2021 UCL group stages.

Preview: Ajax vs Atalanta

With Liverpool already guaranteed a berth in the round of 16 and set to finish the group stages as winners in their quartet, second place is up for grabs as Ajax welcome Atalanta for the final matchday. The Dutch side presently sit in third spot, with two wins so far, and come into this game having lost their last two games, including a recent 2-1 to Twente at the weekend which ended a four game winning streak across all comps for Erik ten Hag's men.

However, Ajax do have an excellent track record against Italian sides, with a seven game unbeaten record in the Champions League, and that includes picking up a point in a 2-2 stalemate with Atalanta this season. Should they be able to earn a victory over their visiting opponents, Ajax would be into the knockout rounds for the first time since the 2018/2019 campaign, when they shocked many observers by making a deep run all the way to the semi-finals.

That being said, Atalanta pulled off a surprise upset recently by beating Liverpool at Anfield. Many had not seen that coming, especially considering La Dea had been humiliated by the Reds in the reverse fixture and were also crushed by Manchester City last season. On matchday five, however, Gian Piero Gasperini's plucky side became the first team in this competition to score against the Reds as they scored twice in the second half in order to snatch a win and keep themselves in contention for qualification for the knockout rounds.

The exertions of their efforts at Anfield seemed to catch up with the Bergamo side as they were unable to keep Danish minnows Midtjylland at bay and ended up dropping two valuable points in a match they should have been able win without much fuss. Over the weekend, La Dea saw their game against Udinese cancelled due to bad weather, which means they come into this tie more rested, but it will be very interesting to see if that will hurt or help them as they will be taking on an Ajax side who will be very determined to end their mini slump and book their spot in the round of 16.
