Preview: Chelsea vs Leeds United

It's been well over a decade - 16 years in fact - since Chelsea and Leeds United met in the Premier League, and it's been a long time coming. And finally, fans will actually be able to watch the game live from Stamford Bridge. It won't be a packed house, with only about 2,000 allowed inside, but it's still progress after COVID-19 has ruined the spectacle of live football for months, and the fans in attendance will hope to make it as lively an atmosphere as possible.

The Blues come into this game having cruised to a well-deserved 4-0 win over Spanish side Sevilla in the Champions League, courtesy of a magnificent performance from Olivier Giroud. The World Cup winner netted all four of his side's goals and it's going to be very interesting to see if he can now force his way into the starting XI on a more regular basis. Overall, Chelsea have won seven of their last eight matches across all competitions, and the last time they lost in regular time was in September, so they are on a 15 match unbeaten run.

That certainly bodes well for the hosts ahead of the visit of Leeds, who sit in 12th spot. The newly promoted side, however, have already picked up three wins on the road - which is as many as they earned during the 2003/2004 Premier League campaign - and that includes a 1-0 win over Everton. That being said, they have also lost two away games and conceded four goals to Liverpool and Crystal Palace, and given that Chelsea boast the joint-top attacking side in the league (along with Liverpool) Marcelo Bielsa's side could be in for some trouble if the Blues are on-form at Stamford Bridge.

Furthermore, Leeds have won just one of their last 21 matches in London, but it is worthwhile noting that they have managed to record shut-outs in their last two matches, so the Blues indeed will be facing a very different team this time around than in past seasons. Lampard will certainly be familiar with Leeds - both as a player, and more recently as a manager from his time with Derby County - and he will be hoping to preserve Chelsea's strong home record that has seen them win eight and draw two at Stamford Bridge since losing 2-0 to Manchester United back in February.

Team news: Chelsea vs Leeds United

Chelsea: Lampard is expected to heavily rotate his team, with players like Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, N'Golo Kante, Mason Mount, Thiago Silva, Kurt Zouma, and Reece James all anticipate to return to the starting XI after largely sitting out during the midweek fixture. Only Ben Chilwell remains a slight doubt after being unused during the away game to Sevilla.

Leeds United: Adam Forshaw remains on the treatment table, while Pablo Hernandez, Jamie Shackleton, and Diego Llorente have resumed training but are not likely to feature here. Jack Harrison is expected to return after overcoming a minor leg injury.
