The Gunners host the Austrian side with the aim of shaking off their poor Premier League form. Will the north London giants emerge triumphant? Here’s our preview of this upcoming UEFA Europa League game.

Preview – Arsenal vs Rapid Wien

Arsenal return to action in Europe, with the Premier League giants taking on Rapid Wien amid a crisis. While the Gunners have been doing well in the Europa League, the same cannot be said about their Premier League form, as the north London outfit’s form has been atrocious. Arteta’s side head into this midweek showdown on the back of a defeat with nothing to place for but a confidence-boosting result.

In their most recent fixture, Aubameyang and Co. hosted Wolves but lost 2-1 despite boasting the home advantage. That result stretched the club’s home losing streak to three games and has left them with only one win from their last six Premier League outings. As a result, Arsenal are 14th in the table, boasting a mere 13 points from their first 10 games. To put this into perspective, north London rivals Tottenham, who they will face this weekend, are top of the table with eight more points.

The Gunners have already booked their spot in the Europa League knockout stage. However, they could win the group should they avoid defeat but the goal is not to simply pick up a point but rather to entertain and exhibit great attacking football. Even in Europe, where the north London giants boast four wins out of four, the club have struggled to put on a full 90-minute show. Instead, there have been huge spells of lackluster displays and moments of magic enough to win games.

Another interesting aspect is the return of fans, with set to be occupied by supporters for the first time in nine months, albeit only 2000 fans. This means should the club put in another uninspiring first-half display, Arsenal lovers can air their frustration from within the stands. However, with the north London derby being right around the corner and qualification already being secured, Arteta will once again rotate, meaning many young and experiences players could take to the pitch.

Team news

Arsenal: David Luiz and Thomas Partey will play no part in this fixture, with the Brazilian picking up a cut after his nasty head collision with Raul Jimenez and the Ghanaian yet to return. Gabriel Martinelli is nearing a return but this fixtures comes too quick for the Brazilian. Willock should remain in the lineup as he has been brilliant in this competition and could be joined by the likes of Nelson, Smith Rowe, and Balogun. Elneny and Pepe could also be given starts.

Rapid Wien: Dejan Petrovic and Dejan Ljubicic are unavailable for the visitors.

Key stats

  • Arsenal have hosted clubs from Austria twice before and won on both occasions, the most recent being a 6-1 triumph over Austria Vienna in the 1991-92 European Cup.

  • Rapid Wien won their last trip to England, beating Aston Villa 3-2 in 2010.

  • However, that is their sole away victory over an English club, losing the remaining three.
