Here’s everything you need to know about the Blaugrana’s penultimate group stage fixture as a Messi-less Barcelona look to continue their perfect record in Europe this season.

Preview - Ferencváros vs Barcelona

Barcelona are gearing up for their penultimate game in the UEFA Champions League group stage, taking on Ferencváros on Matchday 5 of the competition. The Spanish giants have already secured progression to the knockout stage and have thus rested a few key players but regardless, this game could prove instrumental as to whether they win their group or not.

The Catalan giants currently top the table, sitting on 12 points after winning all four of their opening games. Their closest rivals are Juventus, who have also qualified for the round of 32, and they boast nine points, meaning they are only three behind Koeman's men. This means that should Barcelona beat their Hungarian opponents, they will be all but destined to win the group ahead of their sixth and final round showdown with Juventus.

When these two sides met in their opening tie, Messi and Co. marched to a convincing 5-1 victory over the Hungarians, with the Argentine breaking the deadlock before Fati, Coutinho, Pedri, and Dembele added to the score line. However, this wasn't surprising as the Spanish giants were expected to brush aside Ferencváros and the same is true for the return leg.

As a result, their Dutch boss has opted to rest several key players, Leo being one of them. The six-time Ballon d'Or winner was left out of the recent trip to Dynamo Kyiv, with a mainly youthful squad winning 4-0. This time around, Coutinho and Ter Stegen will stay at home alongside their club captain.

As for the home side, they boast no chance of making the knockout stage but remain in the mix for a Europa League berth. They are currently level on points with Dynamo Kyiv and with the Ukrainian giants also expected to lose on Matchday 5 – they will be facing Juventus – things could go to the final day when the Hungarians visit the NSC Olimpiyskiy.

Team news

Ferencváros: Eldar Civic is unavailable for the home side, with Marcel Heister set to deputize once again. Endre Botka has recovered from COVID-19 and should be back in the lineup.

Barcelona: Messi has once again been left out of the squad, with Koeman opting to rest his star attacker whenever possible given the number of injuries at the club. 'He is joined by Coutinho and Ter Stegen, both of which have also been given a breather. Samuel Umtiti, Gerard Pique, and Ronald Araujo are all injured while Clement Lenglet hobbled off with a knock in the recent win over Osasuna.

Key stats

  • Barcelona boast a perfect record against Hungarian clubs, beating teams from that country five times out of five.

  • Ferencváros haven't beaten a Spanish club at home in their last six encounters (D4 L2).

  • However, the Hungarians have never lost at home to a Spanish club in any European competition (P7, W5, D2, L0).
