Atletico's Last 16 hopes in the balance after draw

Champions League: Atletico Madrid's Last 16 qualification hangs in the balance after Bayern draw

December 1, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Diego Simeone's side was held to a disappointing 1-1 draw in Tuesday's matchday five fixture.

Atletico Madrid's dream of progressing to the Round of 16 stage of the 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League season has hit a snag following Tuesday night's draw with Bayern Munich. Los Colchoneros were forced to settle for a point after conceding late to give up a one goal advantage at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Having already progressed to the Last 16 stage, Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick handed a host of his fringe players the opportunity to start in the competition for the first time. A relatively young set-up took to the pitch for the Bavarians, with the likes of Thomas Muller, Jerome Boateng, Benjamin Pavard, Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman all featuring on the bench while prolific goalscorer Robert Lewandowski failed to make the trip.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, approached the game without Luis Suarez and Diego Costa but had enough firepower to avenge the first leg's 4-0 humiliation at the Allianz Stadium. At least that was the indication in the early minutes of the clash with Joao Felix opening the scoring for the hosts inside the first 26 minutes. However, the inability of the Rojiblancos to double their advantage will eventually prove costly as Thomas Muller will eventually tie the game with a spot-kick following his introduction in the second half.

As things stand, Bayern Munich will finish as winners of Group A with no less than 13 points ahead of their final match with Lokomotiv Moscow. The latter's defeat to RB Salzburg means that Atletico Madrid will now be required to at least draw with the Austrian club in what will be a grandstand finale to determine who will progress alongside the reigning European champions out of the group.
