Keeping up with young Americans in Europe Dec. 1: Sergiño Dest, Sebastian Soto, Richard Ledezma

December 1, 2020 By Juan Aguerrevere
Six Americans progressed to the Champions League round of 16 last week while others are leaving their marks across Europe’s top soccer leagues.

Last week was special for several U.S. Men’s National Team players. Barcelona’s Sergiño Dest and Konrad de la Fuente made headlines after winning 4-0 in Kyiv last week. Moreover, Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic returned from injury to play some minutes against London rivals Tottenham.

Catch up on everything you need to know about young Americans competing in Europe.

Sergiño Dest – Barcelona

Left-back Sergiño Dest scored his first Champions League goal last Tuesday against Dynamo Kyiv and played the entirety of the game. The 20-year-old also featured in Ronald Koeman’s starting lineup against Osasuna where he played 61 minutes. Two clean sheets and his first UCL goal of his career places Dest at the top of this week’s ‘Keeping up with young Americans playing in Europe’.

Richard Ledezma – PSV Eindhoven

The 20-year-old Phoenix, Arizona native had an eventful week in Europe with PSV Eindhoven. The attacking midfielder was called up to the senior team to play in the Europa League and Eredivisie. On Thursday, Ledezma was subbed on to in added time to play the last four minutes of a Europa League match against PAOK that ended 3-2 in favor of the Dutch side. And on Sunday, he earned his second Eredivisie start when PSV defeated Sparta Rotterdam 1-0.

Sebastian Soto – SC Teslar

Sebastian Soto had an eventful weekend in the Dutch second division, scoring a goal to help Teslar win 2-1 and getting a red card for a harsh tackle. The 20-year-old has six goals in less than 500 minutes this season.

Reggie Cannon – Boavista

Right-back Reggie Cannon has played every minute of the season (840’) since his arrival to Liga Nos side Boavista. On Sunday, he played another 90 minutes and helped his team to an essential goalless draw with Belenenses as Boavista looks to exit the relegation zone. This was Cannon’s second Liga Nos shutout.

Yunus Musah – Valencia

Midfielder Yunus Musah celebrated his 18th birthday during his ninth start for Valencia on Saturday. The teenager played 71 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid the day before his 18th birthday.

Anyone who supports the U.S. Men’s National Team wants Musah to commit to the team. One of his biggest fans is Tyler Adams who spoke good things about his new teammate.

Tyler Adams – RB Leipzig

Despite not playing a single minute of RB Leipzig’s UCL game against PSG on Tuesday, 21-year-old Tyler Adams played the entirety of a Bundesliga game against Arminia Bielefeld. The American returned to his more natural center-defensive midfield position in Saturday’s 2-1 home win.

Antonee Robinson – Fulham

Full-back Antonee Robinson had a good outing on Monday afternoon when Fulham defeated Leicester City away from home. Like last week, Robinson was not afraid to join the attack. The 23-year-old has completed ten crosses (second most behind Reece James who has 12) this season and he even had a shot on target that could have been shot better.

Weston McKennie – Juventus

Twenty-two-year-old Weston McKennie remained as an unused substitute on Juventus’ Serie A 1-1 draw to Benevento on Saturday. However, the American central midfielder started and played 62 minutes of Champions League action in a 2-1 win over Ferencvaros last Tuesday. He will hope to start or get some minutes against Dynamo Kyiv on Wednesday.

Christian Pulisic – Chelsea

Captain America missed Chelsea’s Champions League matchup against Stade Rennais last Tuesday but played 16 minutes against Tottenham on Sunday. Pulisic looked energetic and fit. He will be available for Chelsea’s UCL game against Sevilla on Wednesday.

Konrad de la Fuente – Barcelona

Konrad de la Fuente started his week strong making his Barcelona senior team and Champions League debut last Tuesday against Dynamo Kyiv. Moreover, the 19-year-old scored a game-winning goal on the weekend against Segunda Division B side Lleida while playing with Barcelona B.

Chris Richards – Bayern Munich

Chris Richards played his first Champions League minutes with Bayern Munich last Wednesday against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg. The 20-year-old played 79 minutes and helped Bayern to a 3-1 win from the left-back position.

Gio Reyna – Borussia Dortmund

Attacking midfielder Gio Reyna had another quiet week, playing 81 minutes in Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Club Brugge in the UCL on Wednesday and 23 minutes in Dortmund’s 2-1 home defeat to FC Koln in the Bundesliga on Saturday. The 18-year-old will aim to be involved in the scoring on Wednesday when BVB face Lazio. The winner of the game will qualify for the round of 16.

Matt Miazga – Anderlecht

Center-back Matt Miazga helped Anderlecht to its fourth clean sheet in all competitions this season after a 0-0 draw against Standard Liege.

Nicholas Gioacchini – SM Caen

Striker Nicholas Gioacchini played 26 minutes of a Ligue 2 game against LB Chateauroux on Saturday. The game ended 0-0.

Joshua Sargent – Werder Bremen

After squaring a ball for a goal against Bayern Munich the previous weekend, striker Josh Sargent missed out on Werder Bremen’s Friday Bundesliga game against Wolfsburg due to ankle problems. Bremen lost the game 5-3 and USMNT veteran John Anthony Brooks scored two goals – one for Wolfsburg and another in his own net later in the game.

Zach Steffen – Manchester City

Zach Steffen did not feature for Manchester City’s Premier League and Champions League games last week. The 25-year-old goalkeeper will most likely start against Arsenal in the EFL Cup quarter-final.

Uly Llanez – Heerenveen

Winger Uly Llanez was not called up for Heerenveen’s squad for its game last weekend against ADO Den Haag.

Tim Weah – LOSC Lille
