The final month of 2020 is here! The world has entered December, the final chapter in what has been a roller-coaster year for the footballing world. The final 30 days of this calendar years brings about many holidays, namely Christmas and New Year's Eve, but this does not mean there will be no interesting matches.
The December fun starts today, which is the first of the month, with the UEFA Champions League clash between Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich but that's not all. The UEFA Women's Euro 2020 qualifiers will also take place on Tuesday, with the likes of Germany, Netherlands, and Portugal set to take to the field.
Here are the top events taking place in December 2020.
December 8-9 will see the sixth and final matchday of the UEFA Champions League group stage take place. Two games in particular standout and that is Barcelona vs Juventus on Tuesday, December 8 and Real Madrid vs Borussia M'gladbach on Wednesday, December 9. The Camp Nou showdown between the Blaugrana and the Bianconeri could see Messi and Cristiano face off for the first time since the Portuguese ace left Real Madrid. The pair were set to lock horns when the Catalan giants traveled to Turin but Ronaldo was forced to miss that match after testing positive for COVID-19. Another interesting thing is that fixture could be a fight to win the group as Koeman's side boast only a three point lead.
Real Madrid will take on Borussia M'gladbach the following day and that match could prove pivotal to Los Blancos' hopes of qualifying. Should the Spanish giants beat Shakhtar on Matchday 5, this match could decide who wins the group.
Two of the biggest derbies in world football are the Manchester and Madrid ones and they will take place on the same day: December 12. In fact, the clash between Los Blancos and Diego Simeone's side kicks off less than three hours after the Red Devils begin their encounter with their noisy neighbors. It will be interesting to see how Pep's side fair against Solskjaer's men given that they have lost three of their last four encounters with the 20-time Premier League champions.
December 14 will see the draw for the UEFA Champions League last 16 and Europa League last 32 take place. This is the first knockout stage so fans will eagerly anticipate the match-ups. After that comes the FIFA Football Awards 2020 on the 17th, with the focus once again shifting away from the football pitch. The main prizes are The Best FIFA Men's and Women's Player awards, with fans wondering who will succeed Megan Rapinoe and whether Lewandowski will get recognized.
Boxing Day is always exciting for Premier League lovers and the 2020 edition is no different, with two stellar fixtures set to take place the day after Christmas Day. They are Leicester vs Man Utd and Arsenal vs Chelsea. The way things stand right now, the Foxes and the Blues are two clubs looking to rival Liverpool and Tottenham in the title race while the Red Devils and the Gunners aim to make ground in the race to qualify for Europe.
