UEFA Champions League: Where to watch Liverpool vs Ajax live on December 1, 2020

November 30, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Liverpool face a tricky test in Tuesday's outing as their objective to progress to the last 16 stage remains in the balance.

Match preview

Liverpool will have their eyes on closing out their UEFA Champions League group stage campaign when they welcome Ajax to Anfield on Tuesday. With two matches remaining, a win over the Dutch outfit will guarantee the Reds a spot in the last 16 stage as they aim to win the title for the second time in three years.

Heading into the upcoming encounter, the stakes could have been much lower had Jurgen Klopp's men seen out Atalanta in their previous fixture. Two second half goals by the Serie A outfit condemned the Merseysiders to their first defeat in eight matches. In retrospect, the outcome of last week's game blew Group D wide open although Liverpool sit at the top with nine points.

They edge both Ajax and Atalanta with just two points and any result but a win could potentially spell doom for the current Premier League title holders. Having shared spoils with Brighton in a controversial manner in this weekend's Premier League round, the 2019 Champions League winners should be pumped up to seal their fate on Tuesday.

As far as competent challengers go, Ajax can very much be associated with the tag considering how much of a force they have proved to be in European football in recent years. While the current setup might be slightly different from the team that almost sealed a final date with Liverpool in the 2018/2019 edition of the Champions League, they have accrued results that put them in the spotlight in recent weeks.

The Amsterdam outfit will go into Tuesday's game soaring high in confidence and with the sole purpose to extend their unbeaten run. The current Eredivisie title holders have not put a foot wrong in their last eight matches across all competitions, winning seven and drawing the remaining one game.

Over the weekend, they extended their unbeaten run in the domestic league to 10 games, condemning FC Emmen to an emphatic 5-0 defeat. Victory against Liverpool will certainly set the tone for an interesting climax in Group D with Ajax set to take on Atalanta in grandstand finale of this phase.

Team news

Liverpool still have a long injury list featuring Virgil van Dijk, Trent-Alexander Arnold, Joe Gomez, Thiago Alcantara, Xherdan Shaqiri, Naby Keita and Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain. Over the weekend, James Milner was admitted to the treatment room after pulling a hamstring in the draw with Brighton. All the aforementioned stars are expected to miss Tuesday's encounter.

Relatively, Ajax will be without Mohammed Kudus for the upcoming test. The Ghanaian midfielder has been ruled out of action for the foreaable future after picking up a leg injury in the reverse encounter with Liverpool. Former Manchester United defender Daley Blind is also set to miss the game with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, the return of Anthony Santos comes as a massive boost for the visitors.

Predicted starting XI

  • Liverpool: Alisson; N Williams, R Williams, Matip, Tsimikas; Jones, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Firmino, Mane
