Pep: Maradona's death hard on Aguero

Guardiola reveals how Aguero is coping with the death of former father-in-law Maradona

November 28, 2020 By Ali M.
The Man City boss opened up about the loss of Diego, who was the grandfather to Kun's son.

Argentina is mourning the death of footballing icon Diego Maradona, with the entire world joining hands in honoring the legend who sadly passed away on Wednesday after suffering a tragic heart attack. One player who has been deeply affected by the loss is Man City striker Sergio Aguero, a fellow La Albiceleste ace who shared a close connection with the World Cup winner.

Kun is the former son-in-law of Diego, having been married to the legend's daughter Giannina, whom he shares a son with. Confirmation of Maradona's death came while Aguero was on duty for his club in the UEFA Champions League against Olympiacos. While his country mourns their loss, the 32-year-old stayed with the Citizens and is preparing for their upcoming Premier League game.

Speaking ahead of their clash with Burnley, manager Pep Guardiola opened up about how is striker is coping with the situation, admitting that the tragedy hit the club's all-time leading scorer hard. While the gaffer stated that the player is "OK" ahead of today's game, he disclosed that this is "a sad situation for his family" as the grandfather to Aguero's son has just passed away.

"The way I've seen him has been good," Pep said, as per the Sun.

"Of course the impact on the day of the game against Olympiakos was hard.

"And, of course, it was tough, it's normal. He knew Maradona quite well and he was the grandfather of his son.

"It's a sad situation unfortunately for his family, especially for his son but yeah, he's ok.

"But it's a question for him it's difficult for me to answer."

The Argentine striker has been out for most of the season due to injury but made his return in the win over Olympiakos, coming on as a late substitute. This came as a huge boost to the club who have struggled this season in his absence.

Guardiola admitted that while Kun is available to play against Burnley, their iconic forward is nowhere near 100 percent in terms of fitness due to his lengthy layoff.

"He's still not in his best condition - his injury was long," Pep added.

"He needs to be so sharp but we don't have doubts. He needs a bit of time, training sessions and minutes. He has seven months ahead to show."
