Preview: Marseille vs Porto

It's been nothing short of a nightmare campaign so far for Marseille, who were quite unlucky to lose to Greek side Olympiakos on matchday one, and it's been downhill since. They were no match for a much superior Manchester City as they suffered a heavy 3-0 loss, and now come into this upcoming tie with Porto having already lost to the Portuguese giants.

Suffice it to say, Andre Villas-Boas's side must win this match if they want to have any glimmer of hopes in keeping their European ambitions afloat - let alone even have any shot of making the knockout rounds. But to win a match, a team must be able to score a goal, and Marseille haven't even been able to do that, either. They could seal third and Europa League football by beating Olympiakos, who only sit three points ahead thanks to their fortunate win over L'OM on matchday one, but certainly they will not want to dig themselves into a deeper hole by not trying to get anything out of their upcoming tie with Porto.

Marseille come into this match having narrowly beaten Strasbourg 1-0 prior to the international pause, but saw their Ligue 1 tie with Nice cancelled due to an outbreak of COVID-19, which means they will be a bit more rested ahead of Porto's arrival.

Meanwhile, Porto sit in a solid second spot and are in good position to secure their spot in the knockout rounds with a victory over their struggling opponents. With Manchester City expected to beat Olympiakos, this group could be decided with two matchdays to go if everything goes in the visitors' favor, who have recovered well following their opening day 2-0 defeat to the Citizens with back-to-back victories over Olympiakos and Marseille.

Sergio Conceicao's side have been in excellent form lately, with wins in five of their last six across all competitions, and despite sitting in fourth spot in the Primeira Liga, six points behind league leaders Sporting CP, there's still plenty of time in the domestic campaign for them to work their way up the table.

That really won't be the focus for Porto, however, who will be looking to secure a spot in the last 16. The visitors have an excellent track record against Marseille, with wins in four of their last five meetings, and given that Marseille have lost their last 12 fixtures in this competition, the odds, on paper, at least, do look firmly pitted in the Dragons' favor to clinch three points at L'OM's expense.
