Preview: PSG vs RB Leipzig

PSG's eight game winning streak in Ligue 1 came to an abrupt end last Friday as the reigning champs succumbed to a 3-2 loss to Monaco. Although they're still on top of the table, their lead has now been cut to two points, and that marks the first loss in the league for Thomas Tuchel's side since September, when they lost two in a row to kick off their title defense.

That's hardly the way Tuchel wanted his team to come into this crunch tie with Leipzig. As things stand, PSG, who were last season's runners-up in the Champions League, are surprisingly in third spot in their quartet on three points. Were the group stages to end today, they would end up in the Europa League, while Manchester United and Leipzig would progress to the knockout rounds. Their surprise 2-1 defeat to die Bullen on matchday three has increased pressure on Les Parisiens, but at the same time, PSG were missing key attackers like Kylian Mbappe and Neymar for that match, so Leipzig certainly were able to take advantage of a much weakened side.

Leipzig were certainly happy to get one over on PSG, especially considering that the capital giants ended their Cinderella run in the Champions League last season. The 2019/2020 Champions League truly was an interesting out, as die Roten Bullen made it to the semi-finals - their first ever - but were knocked out by a more experienced PSG side which thus denied them a chance to face Bayern in what would have been the second all-German final in less than a decade.

Team news: PSG vs RB Leipzig

PSG: The hosts are still dealing with a huge injury and suspension list, making Tuchel's selection options more difficult for this must-win game. Both Idrissa Gueye and Presnel Kimpembe are banned following their sending off during PSG's loss to Leipzig last round. Midfield duo Ander Herrera and Marco Verratti have been included in the team after recovering from calf and thigh injuries, but are still major doubts to feature and it's not likely that either will start. Meanwhile, Juan Bernat (knee), Julian Draxler (hamstring), Thilo Kehrer (groin), and Mauro Icardi (knee) are still all on the treatment table.

However, the hosts have been given a major boost, as both Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, who missed the reverse fixture - and which certainly gave Leipzig a huge advantage as well - will be availalbe here to feature up front.

RB Leipzig: Marcel Halstenberg is out with a groin injury, while new signing Hwang Hee-chan is self-isolating due to a positive COVID-19 test. Other absentees for the visitors include Lukas Klostermann and Konrad Laimer - both due to knee problems.
