Keeping up with young Americans in Europe Nov. 23: Josh Sargent, Richard Ledezma, Reggie Cannon and more

November 23, 2020 By Juan Aguerrevere
Joshua Sargent, Richard Ledezma, Reggie Cannon and other young Americans took part in European soccer action last week. Learn about what USMNT members have been up to since their return from November Camp.

The U.S. Men’s National Team had a good showing in their friendlies against Wales and Panama during international break. The roster was not only filled with raw talent, but it also consisted of 22 players who play in European leagues. Some of the players who represented the USA during camp continued to turn heads with their clubs last week. Take a look at what young American soccer players were up to last weekend around Europe.

Joshua Sargent – Werder Bremen

Forward Joshua Sargent delivered his third Bundesliga goal contribution in the shape of an assist against league-leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday. He made center defensive midfielder Javi Martinez look silly after taking him on with pace and strength to then serve a crisp cross back to midfielder Maximilian Eggestein. Despite drawing their fifth consecutive game by a 1-1 scoreline, Sargent and his teammates should be happy about coming out of that game with a point.

Richard Ledezma – PSV Eindhoven

After being one of the standout players for the USMNT during international break, 20-year-old Richard Ledezma showcased his passing ability again on Friday with PSV Eindhoven U-21. Ledezma played 90 minutes in the center-forward position and dished out an assist, which ended up helping his team come back from a 3-0 deficit to a 3-3 draw in less than 30 minutes. The American has been called up to PSV’s senior team twice this season, where he has played 16 minutes and managed to deliver an assist against ADO Den Haag on Nov. 1.

Reggie Cannon – Boavista

Right-back Reggie Cannon returned to Portugal from USMNT camp to play 120 minutes in a 1-0 win over Liga Pro side Vizela in the Taca de Portugal. The game marked Cannon’s second clean sheet since his arrival in September.

Yunus Musah – Valencia

Seventeen-year-old Yunus Musah started a La Liga game for Valencia for the eighth time this season on Sunday against Deportivo Alaves. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, but Musah did not disappoint by showing off what he can do with the ball.

Lynden Gooch – Sunderland

Twenty-four-year-old Lynden Gooch helped Sunderland to a one-all draw after dishing out an assist to Grant Leadbitter, who could not have hit that ball any better. The American winger has two goals and five assists in 13 League One matches this season.

Tyler Adams – RB Leipzig

USMNT swiss army knife Tyler Adams went back in time to his MLS days where he used to switch around from playing in a defensive midfielder and right-back position. For the first time since May 2020, the 22-year-old started as a right back. Leipzig ended up tying the Bundesliga game with Eintracht Frankfurt 1-1. The German side will visit Paris on Tuesday to play their fourth UEFA Champions League group stage game against PSG.

Antonee Robinson – Fulham

Left-back Antonee Robinson played a full 90 minutes for Fulham on Sunday. Unfortunately, Fulham lost to Everton 3-2 and remain just outside of the relegation zone above West Brom, Burnley and Sheffield United with four points. Robinson has been trying to improve his attacking game and had a solid display getting forwards on the left-wing. Fulham will face Leicester City at King Power Stadium on Monday, Nov. 30.

Matt Miazga – Anderlecht

Center Back Matt Miazga suffered his first loss with Anderlecht in the Belgian Pro League since his arrival on Oct. 18. The 25-year-old has played 90 minutes in all five games with the Belgian side.

Weston McKennie – Juventus

Weston McKennie played the last 21 minutes of a 2-0 Serie A win over Cagliari on Saturday. The 22-year-old midfielder has recorded three starts in six games and one assist in the process.

Gio Reyna – Borussia Dortmund

Attacking midfielder Gio Reyna was introduced to Dortmund’s Bundesliga match on Saturday against Hertha Berlin in the 77th minute. Unfortunately, The American Dream was not a part of the five-goal fest. Dortmund will face Club Brugge in its fourth Champions League group stage game at home on Tuesday at 3 p.m. ET.

Sergiño Dest – Barcelona

Full back Sergiño Dest replaced Gerard Pique in the 62nd minute of a La Liga clash against Atletico Madrid on Saturday. Barcelona ended up losing the game 1-0 and dropping to 12th position. Dest has not started a game since Nov. 4 when Barcelona defeated Dynamo Kyiv. Barcelona will play against Kyiv again on Tuesday.

Nicholas Gioacchini – SM Caen

Striker Nicholas Gioacchini played 90 minutes in SM Caen’s comeback 2-1 win over Le Havre in Ligue 2. The result helped the Vikings to end the week in second place behind Paris FC by five points as they push to make their return to Ligue 1.

Sebastian Soto – SC Teslar

Striker Sebastian Soto scored a brace against Panama in just 13 minutes of playing time during international break. However, the 20-year-old failed to keep the streak going when he played with SC Teslar in the Dutch second division on Thursday.

Konrad de la Fuente – Barcelona

Winger Konrad de la Fuente returned to Barcelona B last weekend to play in the Segunda Division B. The 19-year-old was subbed in at halftime but was unable to help his team win as they fell 2-0 to CE L’Hospitalet.

Christian Cappis – Hobro IK

Midfielder Christian Cappis played another full 90 minutes on Friday with Danish second tier side Hobro IK.

Chris Richards – Bayern Munich

Center-back Chris Richards was called-up to Bayern’s senior team to face Werder Bremen. However, the 20-year-old did not play against USMNT teammate Josh Sargent.

Christian Pulisic – Chelsea

Winger Christian Pulisic was left out of the squad once again for Chelsea’s away game against Newcastle. The 22-year-old has missed nine games since Aug. 2. Pulisic should be fit for the North West London Derby this weekend.

Zach Steffen – Manchester City

Despite wearing the captain’s armband for the USMNT during international break against Wales and Panama, goalkeeper Zach Steffen was an unused substitute in Manchester City’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham.

Uly Llanez – Heerenveen

Nineteen-year-old Ulysses Llanez did not travel with Heerenveen to play RKC Waalwijk on Sunday. Llanez played a total of 80 minutes for the USMNT during international break.

Tim Weah – LOSC Lille

Forward Tim Weah registered four minutes with Lille on Sunday in a 4-0 win over FC Lorient.

Ethan Horvath – Club Brugge

Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath has not played since a 2-1 loss to OH Leuven on Oct. 24, four days after his sensational Champions League performance against Zenit.
