Los Blaugrana were out of sorts in Saturday's classic encounter with the hosts capitalizing on one mistake to snatch the win.

Barcelona were hit with a double whammy in Saturday's clash against Atletico Madrid with defender Gerard Pique suffering an injury in what was their third league defeat of the season. The Catalans were condemned to their first-ever loss against Diego Simeone after a goalkeeping error by Marc-André ter Stegen was punished with the game's only goal.

Just as anticipated, the clash was not short of the entertainment it promised were both sides going at it hammer and tongs to stamp their dominance on the proceeding inside the Wanda Metropolitano. However, it was the host who earned the upper hand after a misjudgment by Ter Stegen granted Yannick Carrasco the chance to score the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time.

The German shot-stopper vacated his post in goal and raced all the way almost to the halfway line to deal with a loose ball that had emanated from Atletico's half. However, the decision proved to be disastrous as he was beaten to the ball by Carrasco who simply nutmegged him before firing the ball into an empty net outside the 18-yard box.

Ter Stegen subsequently took to Instagram to apologize for the mishap. According to Squawka, the German international has now made five errors that have led to goals since April 2019 - no player in La Liga has managed more in that timeframe.

For the game's outcome, it meant that for the first time ever, Diego Simeone has beaten Barcelona in La Liga. The Argentine manager had failed in 17 previous attempts, with 11 of the meetings ending in defeats while the remaining six were draws. He has been in charge of Los Colchoneros since December 2011.

Prior to the confirmation of the match result, Barca - who are now 10th on the league log - were dealt another blow with Gerard Pique suffering an injury. The 33-year-old defender was replaced with Sergino Dest in the 62nd minute after reportedly picking up a knee injury.

Relatively, Barcelona confirmed that Sergi Roberto had also suffered an injury to his right quadriceps. The midfielder and Pique will be subjected to further tests in the coming days although reports from Spain suggest that the latter could be sidelined for the next six to eight weeks.
