Preview: Newcastle vs Chelsea

Hosts Newcastle will be hoping to prevent Chelsea from temporarily moving top of the Premier League table as they host the Blues for the first match of gameday nine on Saturday. The Magpies, who sit in 13th spot, have had quite a few ups and downs already this term, and although they were able to beat Everton, who at one point were sitting on top of the table, as well as nick a point off Tottenham, they still have yet to achieve full consistency. This has prevented them from moving closer towards the top half of the table, and now they not only will be facing a Chelsea side who are unbeaten in their last six league games, but also will have to do so with a host of players out injured.

Overall, Chelsea are unbeaten in their last eight fixtures across all competitions, and Frank Lampard will want to see his side resume play in the same vein they left off prior to action being interrupted for the latest round of international fixtures. With 20 goals so far, Chelsea are currently the league's top goal scorers, but what's more impressive is the fact that they've finally started to improve defensively, with clean sheets in five of their last six games across all competitions.

However, Newcastle could present a banana peel of sorts. Although the Blues have won five of their last seven meetings with the Magpies, that doesn't apply to trips to St. James's Park, where they've won just one of their last seven trips. That also includes losing this same fixture last season - and thus, although their opponents have been hit hard by injuries, this is a game that the visiting Blues will not want to take lightly.

New signing Timo Werner will also have more than three points in mind when he takes to the pitch - the German international could become the first Chelsea player to score in five straight matches since the iconic Didier Drogba achieved this feat in 2009. In addition, should he net against Newcastle, he will become only the fourth German player to score in three straight Premier League fixtures.

Team news: Newcastle vs Chelsea

Newcastle: Callum Wilson remains in doubt due to a hamstring injury sustained just before the international pause. The Magpies, however, will have to make do without Dwight Gayle, Martin Dubravka, Ryan Fraser, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie, and Jonjo Shelvey for this tie.

Chelsea: Christian Pulisic is still out with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile, while Kai Havertz has recovered from COVID-19 and has returned to training, this game arrives too soon for him to feature in the starting XI. Veteran defender Thiago Silva only just got back from international duty with Brazil and so will be given a rest.
