Following a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Czech Republic in their warm-up friendly tie, Germany will now turn their attention towards overhauling Spain, who still sit at the top of Group 4. Despite losing 1-0 to Ukraine on matchday four, the Spaniards nonetheless have a one point advantage over the 2014 World Cup winners, who come into their upcoming clash with Ukraine level on points with their hosts. Should they win this match, they will then move to nine points, but they will be hoping that bottom-ranked Switzerland can also do them some kind of favor and ensure that Spain fail to win their own tie to help them move into top spot ahead of their crunch clash next week.
It's hardly been an impressive 2020 for Joachim Low's side, who are still unbeaten in this calendar year but have drawn more (four) than won (two) of the games they have featured in. Simply put, if they win both of these final two matches, they will be in pole position to secure top spot in this quartet. Although they've already qualified for the upcoming EURO tournament, winning their group would certainly do wonders to boost the team's and supporters' confidence - especially after a difficult past few years that saw die Mannschaft crash out of the 2018 World Cup and finish bottom of their group at the inaugural Nations League tournament.
As for the visitors, they have already secured their spot at next year's EURO tournament after finishing ahead of Serbia, and more impressively, EURO 2016 winners Portugal during their qualifying process. Currently managed by Andriy Shevchenko, they sit in third, but thanks to their win over Spain, they do have a chance - albeit quite slim - of actually topping their quartet. If they can beat Germany, and then head to Switzerland and pick up all three points there, it just may happen. Of course, Ukraine will also need La Nati to defeat Spain as well. However, they come into this game having lost 2-0 to Poland in their most recent game prior to this match.
Germany: Niklas Sule has been able to return to the team after recovering from COVID-19. In addition, Low will definitely field players like Manuel Neuer, Timo Werner, Leroy Sane, and Toni Kroos after resting them all during the friendly match against the Czech Republic.
However, players like Jonas Hoffman, Robin Gosens, and Benjamin Heinrichs could all miss out here due to various injuries - but it's not likely any of them would've featured anyway as this is a must-win game for Low's men.
Ukraine: In contrast to last month when they were hit with a spate of injuries and COVID-19 cases, the visitors arrive in Germany with a much stronger squad, personnel wise. One absentee, however, for them will be Yevhen Konoplyanka, who wasn't even called up for international duty.
