The current European champions will host Andorra in a preparatory match ahead of their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures.

Match preview

Portugal will prepare for two crucial tests in the UEFA Nations League by welcoming Andorra to Estadio da Luz for a friendly encounter on Wednesday. The Selecao are in a prime position to defend their title in the continental tournament but will first have to deal with the threats presented by group rivals France and Croatia.

Since clinching the maiden edition of the Nations League trophy, the Selecao have grown from strength to strength, losing just once in their last 11 appearances in all competitions. In what will be a make or break match-up in the Nations League with two the two finalists from the previous edition of the World Cup, Fernando Santos will hope that his men will exhibit the same level of consistency in getting good results, starting with a win over Andorra.

Relatively, the Tricolours will use the clash with Portugal as a stepping stone to ready themselves for their upcoming games with Malta and Latvia. Koldo Álvarez's men currently sit at the bottom of Group D1 in the Nations League after securing just two points in four outings.

The upcoming clash with Portugal does not help their case either as it will take some doing for them to finally get a win, having only been able to do so on one occasion in their last 23 appearances. The last time Andorra won a friendly encounter was against Liechtenstein in March 2018, and with Portugal drawing four of their last six, maybe Alvarez's men can shock the world and stun the reigning European champions in their own backyard.

Team news

The biggest talking point revolves around the omission of Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal's upcoming matches. The 35-year-old Juventus star is not expected to play any role in the clash with Andorra after picking up an injury in his club side's draw with Lazio in the Serie A. Ronaldo's former Real Madrid teammate Pepe will also be unavailable for the game as he is yet to recover from a foot injury. Frankfurt's Andre Silva was omitted from the squad.

For Andorra, the most notable absence is the omission of defender Ildefons Lima who has been absent from the side for over a year.
