Los Blancos suffered their biggest defeat in La Liga yet under bizarre circumstances in Sunday's trip to the Mestalla.

Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler hit a hat-trick of penalties to inspire his side to a big win over Real Madrid in Sunday's La Liga encounter. The Spanish midifelder and his teammates defied the odds to secure a 4-1 victory over Los Blancos in what turned out to be an extraordinary 90 minutes of football.

A different narrative was expected to roll out as it was Real Madrid who drew first blood through Karim Benzema in the 23rd minute. Shortly after, Valencia restored parity after Yunus Musah latched onto the rebound of Carlos Soler's first spot-kick and scored but had the goal ruled out after VAR ordered for a retake as a result of encroachment.

Soler made no mistake this time around while a subsequent own-goal by Raphael Varane handed the hosts the advantage going into half-time. As it was the case in the first 45 minutes, there was no shortage of drama in the second part of the clash with Javi Garcia's men using the mishaps of Real Madrid to their full advantage.

Two more penalties were awarded in favor of Valencia; the first of the pair coming as a result of Marcelo's challenge on Maxi Gomez while the other was as a result of a handball decision against Sergio Ramos. However, both were expertly dispatched by Carlos Soler once again, extending Los Che's advantage by three while becoming only third player in history to score three penalties in a single La Liga game.
