The Englishman took the match ball in what was a sensational performance at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Manchester United delivered another remarkable performance to run away as victors when they hosted RB Leipzig in Wednesday's Champions League encounter. The Red Devils cruised to a historic 200th win in European competitions and consolidated their status as leaders in Group H by putting five unanswered goals past their German opponents.

The game was generally decided by fine margins as a different script could have been penned had the officials overruled a number of close calls. First, the Video Assistant Referee was called into action after Mason Greenwood marginally escaped an offside position to slot home the game's opener in the 21st minute.

In the second half, the game initially gave the indication of being a low-scoring affair as the lead was just one with a little over 15 minutes left to play. Then came the Marcus Rashford show.

The 22-year-old striker who replaced Mason Greenwood in the 63rd minute, scored his first of the night in the 74th minute by beating Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi after racing all the way from the half-way line. Despite the linesman raising his flag for offside, VAR awarded the goal after a replay revealed that the attacker was in his own half when the pass was made.

Rashford got his second four minutes later - this time firing a powerful low shot beyond the keeper and into the net after Fred had fought back to win possession for Manchester United. Shortly after, the opportunity to glitch the hat-trick presented itself when Marcel Sabitzer brought down Anthony Martial in Leipzig's penalty area. Usually, Bruno Fernandes is expected to do honors from 12 yards but the Portuguese handed the ball over to Rashford who, in turn, gave it back to Anthony Martial to extend the lead to four.

The latter will return the favor in the second minute of additional time, assisting Rashford to smash home the fifth goal for his hat-trick. The night's win ensured that Manchester United remained at the top of Group H with six points and six goals to their name.

Below are some of the feats achieved in the Red Devils' resounding win:

  •  The win over RB Leipzig was the 200th for Manchester United across all European competitions.

  • Marcus Rashford is the fifth player in the history of the Champions League to score a hat-trick as a substitute.

  • Marcus Rashford is the second Manchester United player to score a hat-trick as a substitute. Current manager of the club Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the first to do so against Nottingham Forest in in the Premier League in February 1999.

  • Marcus Rashford scored in back-to-back Champions League matches for the first time.

  • Marcus Rashford is the first Manchester United substitute to score two or more Champions League goals since David Beckham did so against Real Madrid in April 2003.
