The president and the board could take drastic measures if the vote of no confidence goes through as initially planned.

According to SPORT, Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and the club's current board could resign in protest just days before the team's highly-anticipated Champions League showdown with Juventus.

And what exactly are they protesting, you might ask? The Blaugrana executives are unhappy with the Catalan government as they have reportedly turned down the club's request for the vote of no confidence against Bartomeu and his board to be delayed.

This motion was initiated in the wake of their horrendous 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich, with candidates for the upcoming presidential elections calling for the higher-ups to step down. The first hurdle was to gather 16,521 signatures from the club members in order for a referendum to be held. This requirement was met and now a second round of voting is due, with 66.5% of the club's 150,000 members needing to vote against the current regime in order to force their removal.

However, due to the coronavirus pandemic and the toll it is taking in Catalonia, the Barca board request the referendum, initially scheduled for November 1 and 2, be postponed. The Camp Nou side have already seen 800 members lose their lives to COVID-19, with several of those required to vote being in the vulnerable category over the age of 60.

The Spanish giants sent a letter to the president of the Catalan government Pere Aragones pleading for him to suspend the vote of no confidence. Those campaigning for a vote of no confidence saw this as another desperate attempt by Bartomeu to remain in power, with the government now giving the go-ahead for the referendum to be held as initially scheduled despite the COVID-19 restrictions.

A meeting is scheduled for today to discuss Barcelona's finances for this season and their budget for the upcoming campaign. SPORT report that here is where Bartomeu will suggest a mass resignation in protest of the Catalan government's decision.

While Bartomeu's oppositions are keen on seeing the current president and his fellow executives leave as early as possible, failure to ensure a proper transition of power would come at a huge detriment to the team and their season. Messi and Co. are on a two-game losing streak in La Liga and have only won two of their first five games.

This report comes at a time when Koeman and his players are focused on their crucial Champions League showdown. Failure to beat the Italian champions would either extend their winless run to four matches or stretch their losing streak to three straight defeats.
