Vardy matches ex-Man Utd ace's feat in Arsenal win

Arsenal 0-1 Leicester: Vardy matches Manchester United legend's Premier League record with goal in historic win

October 25, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Foxes' talisman struck late to make his way up an illustrious list as his side grabbed the vital away win.

Jamie Vardy has gone level with former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs on the Premier League all-time top goalscorers list following his strike in Leicester's win over Arsenal on Sunday. The 33-year-old forward struck late for the game's only goal to fire the Foxes to what was their first-ever win at the Emirates Stadium in over 47 years.

Up until the second half introduction of Vardy, Leicester did not have much to show for in the goal creation department. The English striker replaced Dennis Praet in the 60th minute and immediately rejuvenated the attack of Brendan Rodgers' side. However, his big moment did not arrive until 20 minutes later. A brilliant pass from Youri Tielemans fell into the path of substitute Cengiz Under who, despite having a clear sight at goal, crossed the ball to be headed home by Vardy.

In effect, the 33-year-old striker took his tally for the season to six and surpassed Peter Crouch's record of 108 Premier League goals to move into the top 20 on the all-time goalscorers leaderboard. He is currently tied on 109 goals with Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs despite making his debut in the league six years ago.

In addition, Vardy has now scored 11 goals in 12th appearances against Arsenal and, with five goals, remains the player with the highest number of Premier League goals in top-flight ties at the Emirates. Meanwhile, the win over Arsenal was the third in succession Leicester had managed this season. It is the first time in history that the Foxes have all their first three Premier League away fixtures.
