Ajax thrash VVV Venlo 13-0 to set new record for biggest win in Eredivisie history

October 24, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Well, that was far from a routine win for the defending champions.

Ajax have set a new record for the biggest win in the Dutch top-flight following Saturday’s resounding win over VVV Venlo. The Amsterdam outfit scored 13 unanswered away goals in the day’s encounter to break their own record which they set 48 years ago.

Erik ten Hag’s men went into the weekend’s encounter off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League. However, it did not take them long to navigate their course back to winning ways, scoring the four first half goals against VVV Venlo.

With no possibility of a comeback in sight, the hosts had their woes compounded by the sending off of skipper Christian Kum in the second half. Ajax subsequently added nine more goals to their haul in the space of 24 minutes, with 19-year-old striker Lassina Traore finishing with five goals to his name.

In the end, Ajax set a record for the biggest margin of victory ever in the history of Eredivisie. They broke the record they set in 1972 when they beat Vitesse Arnhem 12-1. With just six matches played, ten Hag's side now boast a goal difference of 21 to compliment the 15 points they have accrued so far.
