Liverpool concede controversial pk vs Sheffield

Watch: Liverpool concede from penalty at Anfield for the first time in two years after controversial VAR call

October 24, 2020 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Reds were left bemused after an apparent free-kick call was awarded as a penalty kick for the visitors.

Liverpool were made to chase an equalizer in Saturday night's Premier League clash with Sheffield United after a controversial penalty call saw them trailing. The defending champions were dealt a minor setback with the Video Assistant Referee playing a vital role in the turn of events.

The quest to get back to winning ways after a two-game winless run would have probably gone smoothly for Liverpool had an early penalty call not gone in favor of Sheffield. The Blades themselves, who have been struggling since the start of the new Premier League season, were handed the golden opportunity to take the lead after Fabinho hacked McBurnie to the ground with a late challenge.

With many anticipating a free-kick due to the position of the foul, referee Mike Dean pointed at the spot to hand the visitors a penalty after consultation with VAR. The chance was subsequently tucked away by Sander Berge as Liverpool conceded their first penalty at Anfield in over two years. Watch:
