MLS Week of Oct. 22-25: TV/stream listings, full fixtures, featuring Seattle Sounders vs. Portland Timbers

October 22, 2020 By Juan Aguerrevere
The 2020 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs are just three weeks away as teams continue to battle for a spot in them and other cases higher seeding. Here is the rundown for all the action in the week of Oct. 22-25, including the game of the week between Cascadia Cup rivals Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers.

Major League Soccer has 13 games lined up from Thursday, Oct. 22, through Sunday, Oct. 25, and three of those games will be screened on national television.

First in line is the game of the week between Cascadia Cup rivals Seattle sounders hosting the Portland Timbers at Century Park on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. ET aired by Fox Sports 1 and Fox Deportes.

The second is a derby in the making between Florida rivals Inter Miami and Orlando City on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET broadcasted TUDN USA and Univision USA.

Lastly, the tenth edition of El Trafico will close the weekend on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be available on national television through ABC and ESPN Deportes USA.

The remaining ten games are scheduled to be televised regionally or locally and exclusively available on, ESPN+ and fuboTV.

Game of the Week: Seattle Sounders vs. Portland Timbers

Western Conference leaders Seattle Sounders host the Portland Timbers, who are only behind in goal differential. However, the Sounders have a game in hand, making it a key game for Portland manager Giovanni Savarese and his squad to secure all three points.

Seattle Sounders

The Seattle Sounders are the current leaders of the Western Conference by a ten-goal differential over the Portland Timbers with a game in hand. Yet, they have failed to beat Portland in their last two meetings.

The Sounders boast a terrific defensive record, conceding 17 goals – best in the Western Conference – in 17 games. In terms of going forward, they rank third in the conference with 35 goals. Manager Brian Schmetzer will look to make the best out of Portland's defensive woes by sending players forward. But He'll have to watch out with Portland's attack, especially Chilean forward Felipe Mora, who has been in form lately, scoring four goals and dishing out one assist in his previous five games.

Portland Timbers

The Portland Timbers are 2-1 when playing Cascadia Cup rivals Seattle Sounders this season. Portland's two wins over the Sounders separated the two by minimal difference. However, their only loss came in the form of a 3-0 bashing at home.

Savarese has struggled throughout the season with setting up a prolific defense. In late September and early October, Portland found three of its four clean sheets this season. Nonetheless, they were not able to keep the good run rolling, conceding two goals in a 2-1 loss to Real Salt Lake last Wednesday and one goal in a one-all draw with LAFC on Sunday. Having dropped two points in their past two games, The Timbers will look for a desperate win on Thursday that will edge them closer to a first-place finish in the Western Conference.

Talk of the Week: No 2020 Supporters' Shield?

The Supporters' Shield Foundation board released a statement where they announced the decision to forego awarding the Supporters' Shield for the 2020 season.

The following are the reasons why they decided to take this action:

Fans were not able to attend and fill stadiums, something that, according the Supporters' Shield Foundation, "goes against the spirit of the Shield."

No clarity on whether every team will play the same number of games, or if the league will move to a points per game model for seeding.

Unbalanced scheduling during the season with some teams playing range opponents, leaving "too many questions regarding who the true winner will be."

However, the Supporters Shield Foundation Twitter account received backlash for its decision to the point that they disabled their comments section. Some argued that it was a selfish decision because the fans were always present at home watching. Others believe the latter two reasons are weak, and the league was as competitive as it has always been.

Expect a final decision in the coming days.
