After last season's final disappointment, PSG are rearing to go again and will do with a curtain-raiser against a side that dashed their hopes in the competition in 2019.

Match preview

After an almost perfect 2019/2020 UEFA Champions League campaign, Paris Saint-Germain will return to action on Tuesday when they host Manchester United at Parc des Princes. Last season's finalists will be hoping to set the pace for another strong campaign and what better way to do so than to avenge the shock defeat they suffered at the hands of the Red Devils in the Round of 16 of the 2018/2019 edition.

Against all odds, the Old Trafford outfit - having been defeated 2-0 at home - overturned the scoreline to sail through on aggregate thanks to a 3-1 away win. While the two teams have since been in parallel worlds as far as accomplishments are concerned, the objective to progress out of their tough groups remains common.

For PSG, the heartbreak suffered against Bayern Munich remains fresh and with yet another goal to reach the finals of the European competition firmly in place, getting a win against Manchester United will do more good for the cause. Les Parisiens have had a moderately impressive start to the season so far, winning their last five games in succession after picking up losses in the first two. Coming up against United, the fact that they remain undefeated at home since the remontada orchestrated by the Premier League outfit should be enough motivation for them to clinch yet another win.

Solskjaer's men, on the other hand, will be out to seek the record of becoming the first visiting team ever to defeat PSG at home twice in succession. That will be that they will be required to condemn the French outfit to their only eighth home defeat in 54 Champions League outings.

The feasibility of this is ambiguous as Manchester United approach this game off the back of a topsy-turvy ride on the domestic front. The 13-time Premier League champions have not had it easy in the English top-flight so far and only managed to record their second win in four outings so far against Newcastle on Saturday.

This result has boosted morale in camp, especially considering the fact that their players had to enter the international break with the 6-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur lingering in their minds. On Tuesday, they will hope that history will be on their side once more to avoid losing for only the third time in their first group stage game of the UEFA Champions League.

Team news

Paris Saint-Germain will have to make due against Manchester United with a tall injury list. The Ligue 1 outfit is set to be without Mauro Icardi, Juan Bernat, Thilo Kehrer, Leandro Paredes and Marco Verratti as they are yet to recover from respective injuries. The availability of Marquinhos, Julian Draxler and Danilo Pereira also remains uncertain after the trio sat out the weekend's win over Nimes.

For Manchester United, Edinson Cavani was denied a fairytale return to Parc des Princes due to the lack of match fitness. The striker, who joined the Red Devils in a free transfer, scored 200 goals across all competitions for Les Parisiens during his seven-year stay at the club.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils' skipper Harry Maguire will also be absent after failing to make the traveling squad due to injury. 2020 Golden Boy nominee Mason Greenwood is also out of contention and so is the injured Phil Jones.

Predicted starting XI

  • Paris Saint-Germain possible starting lineup: Navas; Florenzi, Diallo, Kimpembe, Kurzawa; Herrera, Marquinhos, Rafinha; Di Maria, Neymar, Mbappe.

  • Manchester United possible starting lineup: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Bailly, Telles; McTominay, Pogba; Mata, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial.
