NBC Sports Network’s (NBCSN) coverage of the English Premier League topped viewership ratings in the U.S., averaging 395,000 viewers per broadcast and drawing a crowd of 1,579,000 across four broadcasts. The most-watched game of the week Tottenham’s 6-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET. The game ranked 10th in Showbuzzdaily's top 150 Sunday cable originals and network finals, attracting 596,000 viewers and earning a 0.33 viewership rating. Aston Villa’s 7-2 home win over Premier League champions Liverpool ranked second amongst NBCSN four broadcasts last weekend, with 402,000 total viewers and a viewership rating of 0.22.
Mexican soccer screened by TUDN came in first in terms of total views, with 1,715,000 over eight broadcasts, but trailed NBCSN in average views, with 214,000. Seven of the eight games transmitted by TUDN belong to Liga MX, while the remaining game showed a friendly between Mexico and Panama. The friendly ended 3-0 in Mexico’s favor and attracted a total of 316,000 viewers. “El Tata” Martino and “El Tri” made their comeback after almost a year of inactivity and only used domestic players. TUDN’s most-viewed game, which was also last week’s third most-viewed game, was a 2-2 draw between Club America and Pumas UNAM on Saturday at 10 p.m. ET, which received a 0.19 viewership rating and drew 487,000 viewers.
The two Premier League upsets on Sunday were not the only surprises last week. FOX Network’s broadcast of Major League Soccer’s game between Orlando City and the New York Red Bulls was the second most-watched soccer game of the week in the U.S. The game, which was played on Saturday at 4:36 p.m. ET, ended in a 3-1 in favor of Orlando, receiving a 0.32 viewership rating and 531,000 total viewers.
The remaining channels that had single-broadcast soccer games were Spanish language FOX Deportes and Universo. Fox Deportes screened a Liga MX game between Club Tijuana and Chivas Guadalajara on Sunday at 9:49 p.m. that received a 0.11 viewership rating and 279,000 total views. Meanwhile, a 1-1 draw between Leeds and Manchester City televised by Universo attracted 117,000 viewers.
