Top 10 friendly matches to watch in October 2020 ft. Portugal vs Spain, Netherlands vs Mexico

October 6, 2020 By Ali M.
Portugal vs Spain and Netherlands vs Mexico are just two examples of interesting friendly games scheduled for this month.

The major European leagues might have recently kicked off but yet another international break is upon us. Club football has entered a short pause as players join up with their national teams for the first international break since the 2020/21 campaign began.

Several interesting friendly fixtures are scheduled to take place, with the likes of Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, and England are set to take to the field.  While international friendlies, and the international break as a whole, tend not to be popular among lovers of the beautiful game, here are the two standout fixtures to keep you entertained and possibly change your stance.

Portugal vs Spain – Cristiano and Co. warming up for two crucial UEFA Nations League clashes with La Furia Roja showdown

The standout game on this list is undeniably Portugal vs Spain. Two of the world's best national teams will face off on Wednesday in what should be an entertaining clash. It might not be a repeat of the thrilling 3-3 draw they played out in the 2018 FIFA World Cup group stage but a thriller can be expected nonetheless.

One interesting aspect is Portugal's fixtures list for this international break. Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. are gearing up for two tricky UEFA Nations League matches in their bid to defend their title. After the Spain clash, the European champions will travel to France for Matchday 3 of the UEFA competition. After that comes an encounter with Sweden. Wednesday's clash with Luis Enrique's side could set the mood for those two UNL fixtures.

Netherlands vs Mexico – De Boer to face El Tri in debut game for La Oranje

Another interesting friendly taking place in October is Netherlands vs Mexico. This is a must-watch fixture as it will see Frank de Boer make his debut as national team manager. Having replaced the promising Ronald Koeman, the pressure is on De Boer to deliver. The man is highly regarded in his home country but after horrible spells with first Inter Milan then Crystal Palace, the jury is out on his managing credentials. As for Mexico, this will be their first game in 2020 and their first match in Europe under the helm of Tata Martino.
