The champions found themselves on the wrong end of an extraordinary result in Sunday's league encounter with the Villians.

Premier League champions Liverpool were subjected to one of the most embarrassing results in recent memory following Sunday's trip to Aston Villa. A dramatic encounter at Villa Park resulted in the Reds being at the wrong end of a 7-2 scoreline hours after Manchester United had shipped six goals against Tottenham Hotspur.

One man credited the most for the battering was Villa striker Ole Watkins who, prior to the night's encounter, was without a goal in the Premier League after completing a club-record move from Brentford this summer. Against the champions, the English forward needed just four minutes to open the gates for the onslaught with a calm finish after receiving the ball from Jack Grealish who had made the best out of a goalkeeping howler.

In the end, Watkins will stroll home with three goals to his name and the matchball albeit he could have made a strong case as a potential contender for the Golden Shoe this season had he been a bit more prolific. Needless to say, the likes of Jack Grealish, Ross Barkley and John McGinn can equally be credited for the triumphant day for Dean Smith's side.

After creating Watkins' first two goals, Grealish got in on the action himself and bagged two for himself. McGinn had a bit of luck on his side as he got on the scoresheet after his volley deflected off Virgil van Dijk into Liverpool's net. Debutant Ross Barkley then announced his arrival with a stunning long range effort. For Liverpool, Mohamed Salah proved to be a spark in what was a gloomy day by being the scorer of both consolation goals.

In retrospect, a number of records were shattered while a few more received updates as a result of Aston Villa's ruthlessness. Here are all of them as per Opta stats:
