Preview - Real Madrid vs Real Valladolid
Real Madrid head into their third La Liga fixture of the 2020/21 season having registered their first victory of the campaign. The defending champions began their title defense against Real Sociedad and drew 0-0 and were in danger of dropping further points in their second game, their trip to Real Betis. Fortunately, Zidane's men managed to comeback from 2-1 down to triumph 3-2.
An own-goal from Emerson followed by a late goal from captain Sergio Ramos earned Los Merengues the victory and what a crucial result it was. Dropping points in the first two games of the season could have proven costly further down the line given how Barcelona and Atletico, the two biggest threats to Real Madrid's title defense, began their campaigns with huge victories. The Blaugrana brushed aside Villarreal 4-0 while Atletico Madrid thrashed Granada 6-1.
Zidane's men are not at full gear yet, which is understandable given the shortened summer break. Nonetheless, they showed resilience in their clash with Real Betish and will need to exhibit similar character against Real Valladolid. This is Real Madrid's first home game of the season. As a result, failure to win will seed doubt and spark criticism.
Regardless, there are reasons for Ramos and Co. to be confident. Their opponents are yet to win a game this season, drawing two and losing once in their first three fixtures. The visitors finished 13th last season, however, and should thus not be underestimated.
Team news
Real Madrid: Eden Hazard has been unavailable due to an ankle issue and that looks to be the case for this fixture. Additionally, Marco Asensio and Eder Militao are doubts. Mariano and Toni Kroos have been ruled out. Luka Jovic started in the Real Betis game but we don't expect back-to-back starts for the out-of-favor striker. Marcelo, on the other hand, should return to the lineup.
Real Valladolid: Jordi Masip has contracted the coronavirus and is thus unavailable.
