Who can challenge Lewa for top scorer?

Five potential rivals to challenge Lewandowski for the Torjägerkanone this season

September 27, 2020 By Michelle Bonsu
The Bundesliga season has just kicked off, but there will be many players already looking to prevent Bayern star Robert Lewandowski from winning a fourth consecutive Torjägerkanone.

Although the 2020/2021 Bundesliga season only just started, there are several players who will be battling to clinch the Torjägerkanone at the end of this campaign. Bayern's Robert Lewandowski is the reigning holder of this coveted prize as he netted 34 goals in the league to help fire die Roten to another consecutive league title.

But who will be able to challenge him? There will be many players hoping to stop him from winning another Torjägerkanone, and some are even among his fellow colleagues at Bayern Munich.

Here's how the top scorers list looked last season:

Timo Werner, who at one point was looking like a real rival to Lewandowski last season, unfortunately hit a rough patch and ended up finishing second with six less goals than the Polish star. With him off to Chelsea, it will be very interesting to see who will be able to really put up a good fight for the Torjägerkanone in the 2020/2021 term.

So, who are some of the potential players who just may have a shot at denying Lewandowski from winning a fourth straight (and sixth overall) Torjägerkanone?

Let's have a look.

1. Serge Gnabry

Club: Bayern Munich

Goals scored last season: 12

Goals scored so far this season: 3

Although he's not an out-and-out striker, Gnabry managed to finish as the second-top goalscorer for Bayern last season with 12 goals and has started off this campaign on a good foot by netting a hat-trick as die Roten cruised to a 8-0 win over Schalke on matchday one. He'll have a lot of work to do as teammate Lewandowski will be looking to maintain his grip on the Torjägerkanone, but he's gotten off to a great start.

2. Andrej Kramaric

Club: Hoffenheim

Goals scored last season: 12

Goals scored so far this season: 5

The 29-year-old Croatian international is currently Hoffenheim's all-time top goalscorer, and ended last season with a bang as he scored all four of his team's goals during a shock rout of Borussia Dortmund. In doing so, he became the first player to net a poker against die Schwarzgelben at Signal Iduna Park, which secured sixth for his team and a spot in the Europa League.

The break hasn't slowed him down whatsoever, as he netted a hat-trick against Köln on matchday one to fire his side to a 3-2 victory. And he followed that up with a brace against Bayern Munich to condemn die Roten to their first loss in the Bundesliga since losing 2-1 to Borussia Moenchengladbach on December 7th.

3. Erling Haaland

Club: Borussia Dortmund

Goals scored last season: 13

Goals scored so far this season: 2

Haaland's rise to fame is pretty notable considering that not many people outside his native Norway and followers of the Austrian Bundesliga had heard of him only a few years ago. However, he burst onto the scene in May of 2019 and hasn't looked back since. At the U-20 World Cup, the tall, powerful attacker netted nine goals during Norway's 12-0 humiliation of a hapless Honduras side, and although it wasn't enough to prevent the Scandinavian side from crashing out at the group stages, he ended up winning the Golden Boot.

Not surprisingly, this, plus some standout performances with Red Bull Salzburg following the U-20 World Cup earned him a move to Borussia Dortmund, and the young Norwegian picked up easily from where he left off from his prior team. By the time the season ended, he had netted 13 goals - an impressive output considering he had only played half a season for die Schwarzgelben.

So, now in his first full season at Signal Iduna Park, it goes without saying many will be watching Haaland to see if he can surpass his impressive form from 2019/2020.

4. Jadon Sancho

Club: Borussia Dortmund

Goals scored last season: 17

Goals scored so far this season: 0

Haaland will be facing some stern competition from fellow youngster Jadon Sancho, who had a breakout campaign for die Schwarzgelben last season. The English international not only was in the top three in terms of goals scored, but also was a key assist provider, with his 16 assists only bettered by veteran attacker Thomas Müller's 21. That means that Sancho was directly involved in 33 of Dortmund's 84 Bundesliga goals last campaign.

Although he hasn't opened his account just yet and was unable to do much as his side slumped to a 2-0 defeat to Augsburg, given that he has already netted in the DFB-Pokal, it won't be long before the former man gets up and running.

5. Andre Silva

Club: Eintracht Frankfurt

Goals scored last season: 12

Goals scored so far this season: 2

Last season saw Portuguese striker Andre Silva score 12 goals in 25 appearances for Eintracht Frankfurt, where he was on loan from AC Milan. So far, he's scored twice, with one goal each in back to back fixtures for his club and it goes without saying that he'll be hoping to better his haul from last term. His max output was 16 goals for Porto in the 2016/2017 Primeira Liga season, so it will be interesting to see if he can hit a new career high record at the end of this current campaign.

Finally, despite the potential of these other players, ino one can deny that Lewandowski is still the contender to run away with the coveted prize. Indeed, given how the Polish ace has dominated the scoring charts for the past few seasons, we can't rule him out from making it a seventh Torjägerkanone at the end of this season. In fact, Lewandowski is the Bundesliga's top all-time foreign goalscorer and is only behind Klaus Fischer (268) and the legendary Gerd Müller (365) in terms of goals scored.
