Southampton vs Tottenham – Preview

Tottenham are gearing up for their second match of the 2020/21 Premier League, a showdown with Southampton. Both sides fell to disappointing losses in the opening day of the season, with Spurs suffering a 1-0 defeat at home to Everton and the Saints being beaten by Crystal Palace by an identical score line. The goal for both sides is simple: earn the first win of the campaign.

The pressure is already on Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese tactician has embarked on what will be his first full season in charge of the north London giants, having taken over the club in November 2019. Things have been bumpy ever since and despite their strong finish in 2019/20, Tottenham have never looked the exciting attacking side they were during Pochettino’s reign.

A lackluster performance against the Toffees was proof that improvement is needed. In their most recent game, their UEFA Europa League qualifier against Lokomotiv Plovdiv, Tottenham were made to work hard, fighting from a goal down to win 2-1 against their nine-men opposition – two players were sent off. Gareth Bale has since been added to the squad, with the Welsh superstar sealing a sensational return to Spurs on loan from Real Madrid. However, he will not be fit to play for quite some time and until then, Kane and Co. must regain their form.

As for Southampton, they will need their entire squad to chip in with the goals. The Saints finished 2019/20 strong but a lot of that was due to the one-man goalscoring show that was Danny Ings, notching in an impressive 22 goals. Today’s clash with Spurs would be the perfect game to bounce back.

Team news

Southampton: Nathan Redmond is tipped to miss this clash due to an ankle ligament injury. Meanwhile, Mohammed Salisu’s fitness remains a concern and could thus wait to make his debut. Stuart Armstrong, however, could be back after returning to training.

Tottenham: Mourinho is expected to call back Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld to the squad, having rested them from the Europa League game. Aurier picked up a knock during training but should be fine for this tie. The same cannot be said about Tanganga, however, as he is out with a thigh injury. New signing Gareth Bale is also out until after October.
