Werner reveals why he snubbed LFC for Chelsea

Chelsea vs Liverpool: Werner reveals why he snubbed Klopp's side for the Blues

September 19, 2020 By Ali M.
The German striker revealed what convinced him to move to Stamford Bridge ahead of Sunday's epic showdown.

Timo Werner was one of the most sought-after strikers in world football during the summer, being heavily linked with a move to first Real Madrid and then Premier League champions Liverpool. The German ace opted to join Chelsea and has now revealed why he turned down a move to Anfield.

The former RB Leipzig sensation made his debut for the Blues last Monday, starting in the 3-1 win over Brighton. Despite failing to find the back of the net, the 24-year-old showed tremendous promise. Their next game is against none other than Jurgen's Klopp's side and Timo could score his debut goal for the Blues against the club he was initially tipped to join.

Ahead of Sunday's showdown with the Reds, Werner sat down with Athletic to discuss his Stamford Bridge transfer. Here he was asked why he opted to join Lampard's side ahead of the rampant Merseyside giants. The striker spoke highly of Liverpool, praising Jurgen Klopp, his fellow countrymen, but revealed that in the end, Chelsea turned out to be the "better fit".

"In another world, it could have happened," the German ace told the Athletic. "If LFC call, you have to listen and think about it. They are one of the best teams on the world, with a super coach - a German coach to boot. Of course you think about that.

"But in the end, my decision went Chelsea's way. Not because there was anything wrong with Liverpool. But at Chelsea, the whole package was a better fit for me."

It was rumored that Liverpool were outpriced. Having cost Chelsea a whopping $68.5M, it was said the Reds could not break the bank for the 24-year-old's services. However, according to Timo, the reason an Anfield move failed to materialize had nothing to do with finances.

Werner went a little bit into detail as to what sway his decision in the Blues favor. He revealed the huge role Lampard played in convincing him to join the London giants, stating that the pair found common ground in their football philosophy during a lengthy conversation.

"He called me and we talked about his idea of football and his idea of how the way the team would look like," the added. Striker added.

"It all sounded good to me, especially the way he talked to me. It wasn't like, 'I'm the coach and I want you. Please come!' He was very relaxed, asking me how I saw things, how I felt about playing here or there.

"And I was able to voice my opinion as well. He listened. In many aspects, we were in close agreement. He wants to play a pressing game, taking the game to the opposition, with quick transitions but to be good in possession as well.

"He said, 'Timo, you will be free to make the right moves on the pitch, I trust you.' It was a very good conversation."

Timo is likely to start Sunday's showdown with the defending Premier League champions. Despite winning their opening game 3-1, Chelsea failed to click against Brighton due to two main reasons: a lack of chemistry and the crucial absentees such as Kovacic and Pulisic. The jury is out on Kai Havertz and whether he will start against Liverpool after his underwhelming display on Monday but all the signs point to Werner spearheading the attack against Van Dijk and Co.
