Arsenal vs West Ham – Preview

Matchday 2 of the 2020/21 Premier League season is upon us and with it comes Arsenal's showdown with West Ham. This will be the Gunners' first game since confirming Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's contract extension, with the club captain taking to the field for the very-first time since officially putting pen to paper on a new three-year deal.

The Gabonese international's future had been a worrisome prospect for the fans, and understandably so. After years and years of seeing their best players leave to win trophies elsewhere, Gooners grew worried that their talisman forward would follow suit. However, the 31-year-old bucked that trend, committing what looks to be his final years at the top to the Emirates Stadium.

A Man of the Match display against West Ham would be the cherry on top of the cake. Aubameyang scored a tremendous goal in the opening-day victory over Fulham and will be keen on adding to his tally. Similarly, Arteta will be aiming for a second consecutive victory, having led them to a 3-0 triumph in the opening day.

Next up is West Ham, a club that have kicked off the new season in disarray. The Hammers began 2020/21 with a 2-0 loss at home to Newcastle, already heaping the pressure on David Moyes. Last season, the London outfit found themselves in a relegation battle but managed to avoid the drop. This term, many predict West Ham won't be as lucky.

The stats paint a bleak picture for the visitors but more on that later. This tie should make for an interesting one. The last time West Ham locked horns with Arsenal, they lost 1-0 but were unfortunate the leave empty-handed. Will we say the same about Saturday's showdown? Tune in to find out.

Team news

Arsenal: Things are easing up for Arteta in the injury department. While Mustafi, Chambers, Mari, Sokratis, and Martinelli all remain on the sidelines, David Luiz is back after recovering from the neck spasm that kept him out of the Fulham game. However, after a strong showing from new-boy Gabriel and Rob Holding, the Gunners might not rush the veteran Brazilian back. Elsewhere, Dani Ceballos will be pushing for a start after coming on a sub in the opening round. Arsenal could opt for a more attacking midfield duo rather than the Xhaka-Elneny partnership that started at Craven Cottage. Willian did not put a foot wrong in his debut game and should thus retain his spot in the lineup.

West Ham: David Moyes has little to worry about in this department. Captain Mark Noble faces a late fitness test while former Arsenal talent Jack Wilshere is a doubt for this tie. Sebastien Haller was spectacular for the Hammers in their recent Carabao Cup triumph over Charlton Athletic and will thus lead the attack.
